Now that exit tax is up to $28 or $30 or whatever, I am curious to know what if you were flat broke for whatever reason, would they prevent you from leaving? How?

Also, are there other countries that have this rip-off scheme going? If CR had it as an entrance fee, I'm sure people would add this to their travel $$ equation.

Pretty much all countries charge U.S. citizens some form of departure tax for leaving by air, it's just that it's commonly rolled into the cost of your airline ticket so you never notice it. I couldn't find an exhaustive list of countries where it's not rolled into the cost of your plane ticket, but Latin American countries seem to get mentioned in this context a lot on various travel forums, along with Australia, NZ, and Thailand.

Honestly, of all the taxes to be paying, coughing up a few bucks so that CR can run its immigration and customs doesn't really bother me that much.

well since I have not seen that american dude for about 3 years ....his play was to hang on the street near the morazan and come up to you and say "hey I am an american just like you " and I dont have enough money to pay my exit tax ......first time he told me he got robbed , next time ....just ran into some bad luck .....first time he caught me off guard ....and I fell for it and slip the guy $5 and told him good luck (it was my first trip) when I seen him again 6 days later I told him to Phuck off and I want my $5 backs back ....he yell out as I was walking away ....." The fee is $26 and has been for 10 years. If you don't pay it you might miss your flight. Anyone traveling should have enough cents to have a credit card for such emergencies?

It's more than $26 now, I think $28, but let's say you got jacked the night before and all you have left is your passport. Then what?

I can imagine that security at the airport will take posession of you and eventually your embassy will get involved and you will get sent home but most possibly they will not let you in country again. Just my opinion.

It is $26 at the bank and at the airport you probably pay a ser charge of $2 where you pay it. I think that not having a pass port would be a bigger threat. Your best bet is to go to the airline,they got you here and they should help you get back. This fee is not a rip off. Most countries have it. What if you took a taxi to the airport and you didn't have the $26 taxi fare. what would you do?

I am sure it has happened, just curious. Oct 1, it went to $28. Hotels are charging $2 more. I see where you can do it online also.

Exit tax and arrival tax both increased on Saturday October 1. Arrival charge went from $15 to 17 but most do not notice that as it is collected by the airlines in the taxes and fees added to your ticket. The departure tax went from $26 to 28 and was noticed since you pay that out of pocket.

I am curious about the online capability. Banco Crédito Agrícola de Cartago was suppose to start that in December but as far as I know it has never been instituted. Has anyone got an update on that?

I may be just a creature of habit. Every trip the same maze.
Hit the gate running (Now that I am older it the bathroom) to
customs. Down to the ICE booth for chip. Pick up the bag.
Buzz past all the Hacks out side and up the escalator. Pay
the exit tax. Change the money at the bank right there.
Then like a flash to a cab, cash in hand. Off to the hotel, check in then
to Bills to find a stool for my butt. The rest is just fate.

Just keep it simple. (It's all my mind can handle)

Last trip Memorial Day week my Spirit flight was delayed more than one hour because they had a flight crew as passengers that hadn't paid their exit tax. I don't know if thay are required to or not, but they wouldn't let the plane leave. An extra hour in seats that don't recline !!

i think it was my first trip a dead broke monger was at the airport begging for a few bucks to make the tax. i gave it to him and watched him pay it. idk what would happen but i think i would start the panhandling as opposed to trying to leave without paying it.
once i left my cell phone in my apartment. i tried to ask people to make a local call on a cell phone after finding the pay phones wanted like 30 bucks to make a call on a credit card. had to ask like 20 people and it was the armed security outside that finally let me use one. not exactly a friendly group there if you need help ime.

A cell call on ICE to a CR number is like 2 cents so you wouldn't think you'd have a problem.
