I should know this by now but it hasn't come up till now when I am planning something. What are the regular school hours, if there are regular, for grammar school K*ds, and the same for high school K*ds? When are the vacations--I know one starts in June or July for a while I think.
Seems like Tico school hours and vacations are alot different than the estados.

As an aside, what is the typical highest level of education they get to?

My chica lives 15 miles out in a small pueblo, they have a school on the main road and I hear there's a high school but I've never seen it. She's perfectly literate writing spanish but I wonder how far she got, don't want to ask. Are there typical levels?

I don't know if all schools so it this way but the K*ds in my family have morning classes 7-12 3 days a week, and afternoon classes 12-5 the other 2 days.

Vacation is early December to early Feb

Their school year ends in mid December, summer if they had one, and starts around the first Monday in February. They also have a couple of weeks off in early July
I agree with Orange 3 days in the mourning and 2 in the afternoon.

She probably has not seen the high school either.

As you can imagine, with the low incomes and many Ch*ldren in these tico families there comes a time when they just can't afford the transportation, books, pens and uniforms to send their K*ds to school and more often than not it's the girls who stay home after the 5th or 6th grade to help around the house.

Unfortunately, these higher grades of education not only increase the understanding of math, biology, history etc but many intangibles such as working in groups, integrity, honesty, getting along with others, loyalty and most of the things that you don't get from the girls of the DR and SL.

Don't be fooled by there ability to read and write...most 5th graders anywhere can at the level we relate to them

I am straying far afield in this but for various articles on education in CR (mostly but not exclusively expat family oriented), please see this:

Extracted from this: The CR academic year is March thru November.

Unfortunately not all information obtained on the Internet is accurate.

The Costa Rica public school year begin in the first or second week of February and ends in early December. The exact dates change from year to year but fall within those guidelines.
