Just a general enquiry,

I have to have a hernia operation so i booked myself to do it in the burmungrad hosipital in bangkok to do it. Means i get a free flight to bangkok and into a world class facility to do my surgery. Going to make a trip out of it...I heard Costa Rica is also pickinig up as a destination for medical tourism...anyone have any experience? Could this be an option? I know Thailand is incredible but after more trips then i can count becasue of work was thinking of going somewhere else for this 'medically required' vacation:)..

CR is good for the price conscious medical tourist.
I have had some work done, and the savings were substantial.

I know of no CR upscale place with a package, including airfare.

Depending on the type of hernia you might not be having sex for weeks of recovery, something to consider.

Costa Rica is known for its medical tourism. You'll also find medical tourism in Colombia... and there are tour coordinators who will not only arrange the medical procedure, but who will take care of transportation and lodging as well.

I have had some medical issues resolved at Clinica Biblica in downtown San Jose. Very professional folks who are prepared to help gringos and who speak fluent English. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy at Clinica Biblica in January. The price is about a third or less of what it would cost me in Atlanta. The savings pays for my airfare plus a few sessions. i had alot of dental done recently there, no problem, good work, priced right. also had a small skin cancer off of my leg at a dermatoglist, dr hidalgo, office, same.

something major down there i don't know. risk of infection in any hospital, including in the us is very, very high. superbugs mrsa, vrsa, and another new one are hospital born infections that can keep you very sick and hospitalized for a long time. google mrsa and vrsa and you'll see. that would be my worry--stuck in cr for a long time without a support net. i always buy the travel insurance, about 40 bucks which includes re-patriation evacuation if you get killed, and med evac to the states, but i'd have to look and see if it covers complications from elective surgery.
