If any of you decide to bring a 3G phone to Costa Rica and expect to get a 3G signal. Make sure that the device is capable of operating on UMTS band 5. This is the only band used in Costa Rica and not all 3G devices support this band. To date there is no such 3G device similar to a quad band GSM phone that is capable of all UMTS bands. My 9780 Blackberry bold did not get a 3G signal since it operates on bands 1, 4 and 8.

My motorola Karma 3G worked OK, but good info, thanks for the post. Others may chime in with their models that work.
