I have been by there 3 times now in the last week or so, and the place is shut tight, no notice of being closed temporarily or permanently. As book stores go it's a total mess but it's all we have downtown. Does anybody know if it's closed for good or is it perhaps just temporary? I know the owner to speak to but unless I run into him I can't contact him. Any info on this, anyone? Also, other than the little room at ARCR, is there another used book store that carries English language books? |

You can also consider the Nook from Barnes and Noble. |

DiegoC wrote: You can also consider the Nook from Barnes and Noble. I have been told that is not a good choice for those who live in CR. You can not download to a CR IP address on a Nook. You have to use a proxy IP. The newer Kindle basic model has wi-fi capability and the older one allows you to download to your computer and transfer to the Kindle if you have a CR IP. |

On the subject of downloading to a Nook in Costa Rica. I was just reading the latest Costa Rica Living digest and there was this post: Quote: I just got off the phone with B&N support. There is an issue of foreign rights and payments to the authors. B&N only pays royalties on books for US rights which do extend to US military bases but only US IP addresses. Anybody using a US IP address in CR? If you do, please share the method and we can make the Nook functional again. BTW-B&N has no plans to broaden the Nook for int'l use any time in the future. ![]() There were a couple of other posts on the subject and they pointed out that you had to use a VPN service to download books in Costa Rica. To me it seems like a big PIA when you can get a Kindle and download with no problem. |

Well, that is a definite awe sh*t – I just purchased a NOOK. In about two weeks I’ll let you know if it works. |

I have a Kindle but I've yet to download any books after I moved here, I have too many already on it for now. I guess I'll have to figure out how to DL to my computer since in the past I used wifi to DL them directly to my Kindle. Or I think I may try to use it at the Sportsmans since they have wifi there. |

Yup, it is indeed one of the best birthday gift I ever got, don't leave home w/o it, but keep it on a leach as they will walk on you. ![]() |

Here's a recent Thread on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Brother Miamiheller's post has particular resonance as to the "why's": viewtopic.php?f=20&t=38078&p=430242&hilit=vpn#p430242 |

Yep, StrongVPN is working gangbusters for me, but I notice when go through their servers, my speed is significantly slower than when I'm not on their servers. |

I don't see why the owner and employees would need to sleep so late since they sleep while on the job. Thanks for the info. Also thanks to all for the e-book reader ideas. I think that may be the way to go. I'm still doing research. Some e-book readers seem to handle a lot more formats than Kindle. Kindle has lots of features I would never use and at the moment I'm inclined not to select it. I am not interested in new best-sellers, and the amount of e books I have found elsewhere for nothing is enough to keep me reading the rest of my life. But I am still doing research and thanks for the idea, ID. |
I found this list of bookstores (of course listing the late Mora's prominently)--hope it helps: http://livinglifeincostarica.blogspot.c ... glish.html
KIndle works in Costa Rica on wi-fi only but it works well. Nook ereaders do not because you cannot buy from Barnes and Nobel bookstores. B&L cannot surmount tax issues with Costa Rica. |

You can download Kindle books to your computer and then transfer them to the Kindle with a USB cord. In fact older model Kindles can only download books this way in Costa Rica. |
