Post subject:  Mail for General Delivery Oficina de Correos Pickup
I surfed for an hour or so on this issue. I need to send a cellular battery unavailable in CR to a friend near Quepos. As we know, they don't have home delivery, especially where she is, way out, and I don't know anyone close to her that has an apto. I learned you can send it addressed to her at her Post Office with her zip (Quepos 6350) and they will hold it for her ("Lista de correo") and she can pick it up. Anybody have any first hand info on this procedure with Post offices in CR or related issues? Thanks.

My postmaster said I can send it registered for $13 which may reduce pilferage.

The CR government sent my residency cedula to me through the mail. It was sent using the registered service and I received it just fine in 2 days. Went to the local post office and ask for it and it was waiting. Had to show I.D. because of the registered service (and it being a cedula). On the other hand, twice I've had minor items sent to me at the post office here from the states and neither small package arrived :(

Visit the local DHL office. They have pick up & also offer courier service. No idea on pricing.

I doubt that DHL, UPS, Fed Ex, what have you, are going to pick up my package in Chicago and then deliver to a pueblo 22 kilo's out of centro Quepos, into the bush on a dirt road, get to the pueblo of Londres, population 500?, and then try and find an address of 50 meters east of the cemetary, etc, etc, which is another 3 klick's into the bush, on a road that is half mud, half 2 foot boulders with 3 foot pot holes, and if the driver gets incredibly lucky and he finds the unmarked 4 foot clearing to a so called "entrance" to a small group of shacks that are set way back in the jungle, and then walks 100 meters into the banana trees in the rain and mud, I doubt he is going to figure out which house of the 7, 100 meters apart, is the right one. I do not think that their GPS has gotten that far as of yet.

DHL/UPS/FedEx pricing in CR is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

What keeps them "honest" in the US and elsewhere is well-run, fairly priced governmental postal services. Evidently no such luck in CR.

Yes they will. Typically you give them a local number to call once it's in Quepos. They call & get directions, timing, etc. The recipient can either then visit the office or the courier will deliver up those dirt roads, typically on a motorcycle.

However.....Have NO idea as to pricing.


What's the package? I could probably take it in my luggage as far as SJO if you make other arrangements. PM me if you need help & it looks reasonable. Also consider in luggage as far as SJO then DHL from SJO to Quepos.

Thanks anyway, DDdick, I sent it yesterday registered to a friend of mine who has an APTO in Quepos, but it was nice of you to offer. They tell me no delivery whatsoever. I'll post if it is delivered so everyone can get a time frame.

Yes, the pricing for Fedex, DHL and UPS to CR and back is outrageous. I was going to ship 20 lbs of stuff to CR and they all wanted between $6-800. I checked with Continental and a third bag with 50 lb allowance costs $150. So I brought 50lbs more of my private stuff.

Also, I found Aeropost. When i buy things online, they offer great rates to ship them to you - you give the website their Miami address as the shipping address, and they forward it to you, and they say they will handle customs handling.

Does anyone know how reliable shipping is to CR? I´ve heard some stories about things never making it here. What are the odds of a fed exed package being shipped to a CR po box not making it?

I think Q#1 is to find out if they will ship to a Post Office, they usually don't in the states but there is one exception I recently learned about on something I bought on ebay (maybe that was UPS), but maybe there is a Centro American exception for FedEx or maybe they routinely do so.

Am I the only person who has had problems with the Tico mail service. I had sent a package to a friend in France from Costa Rica using the Tico post twice and for some odd reason, it never made it to its destination. I used UPS and no problem

I think that some Tico post office workers like that go through packages.

In the US you have the Postal Inspection Service to guarantee the sanctity of the mail that all Postal workers swear an oath to defend. In CR, not so much.
