I am just curious what everyone uses as a cover story when coming down to CR to monger. Normally, there is a rather "eclectic crowd" that journeys south to Costa Rica; you know, the LLBean/Banana Republic vests, cargo pants, sun hats, lots of tie dyes and grey hair in ponytails. I was just wondering in a general sense what kind of experiences some of you have when headed there with your seat mates. I normally will have either a couple of dinosaur hippies or young, no nothing, newly married couples sitting next to me. Once and a while, there will be two young chicks, which normally will make the trip a little more pleasant, if they are cool, but I am careful not to share to much info about where I am staying or doing. After one particularly strange encounter, I take to loading the IPod with movies, strapping on the noise cancelling headphones and tuning out the seat mates as much as possible. Any thoughts, one way or another about chatting up the seat mates? :?:

I tell them I have a girlfriend down there and I fly down as often as I can afford it cuz she rocks my world. Close enough to the truth....

If the person next to me doesn't look like a muyak I will always start a conversation to pass the time. You meet some really interesting people on planes who are from a totally different expiriense than myself. But I must inject this bit. If it is a women from the states that is alone or with a friend or in a group I am somewhat hesitant to start talking to her unless she is young decent looking, and somewhat outgoing. Because less face it young women are always fun to talk too at any age. If they are older than say 36 and above she will usally start out the conversation with with the mundane like the different areas of CR you have been, where will you be going, how many times have you been to Costa Rica ect ect, then after the ice is broken you will get the enevitable are you married? Divorced? Traveling alone? She thinks she is so cunning but I have read the playbook so many times that I am usally waitng at the end of the trail just so we can get to this point. She will then drop something like "What about the women down here?" Or I hear the women are really beautiful" more than likely she has been on the internet read the blogs and articles about the action in Costa Rica she thinks she knows what goes on and is trying to corner you into tripping up and saying something that will give a hint of evidense that you are down here to drink, fornicate, gamble or what we guys generally call having a good time. When you get to this point and the inevetable inuendo is dropped and believe me it will be in one form or another it is your duty as a man to not let this person have even a hint at what you are here for. The fishing line is lame everybody in the world knows fishing is another term for on vacation banging it out with the buds. You want to tye her up in knots right at that moment she thinks she has you cornered. And here is what I use. Oh I work for a little known NGO that helps poorer Costa Ricans in rural areas on projects such as homebuilding, soil conservation and other various local community development projects. I use my vacation time from the company I work for and come down here a few times a year to help out. The next question will be what is the name of the NGO and you say you probably haven't heard of it because it is small and was started by some people from the states on a whim after they vacationed in Costa Rica a few years back. The NGO'S name is Sportsmen Without Boarders. At this point she will look at you like she had just met Mandela and will feel guilty for the whole flight that she could even have a suspision that you would be going to Costa Rica for anything other than honorable purposes. At this point shut the conversation down and let her think about what she just heard and you know she will. Hell she may end up feeling guilty enough that she even to offers to help you with your carryons off the plane! 8)

I've pretty much made it my duty to let them know exactly what i'm there for. Again, I don't volunteer it, but if they want to send the conversation down that road i will say that i'm there for the girls. If pressed into the old "you can't pick up an american girl" routine i just state matter-of-factly that i'm not interested in american women -- especially the hot ones. Depending on the gringa, it could shut her up so you can catch a couple hours of sleep to rest up for the evening's activities.

SR

No she is thinking you are some lowlife loser who has to travel halfway around the world to get some pu*sy and you couldn't bag a decent girl at home even if she was delivered by dominos!

And exactly who gives a fug what some gringa thinks? Why should we give so much weight to her crinkled opinion?

Say as little as possible if it matters to you and let her think whatever she wants. She's probably headed to Limon to meet her Jamaican lover, half her age, anyway. Don't harsh her buzz.

Just ogo with, "there is something for everybody in Costa Rica" approach, dodge the bullets, keep mongering converation to a minimum in the plane and waiting area so that you don't get made as a Ch*ld molester (remember that TSA/Customs can take your laptop and keep it indefinitely).

Yep. We both probably got that attitude at our job, a notoriously big-ego profession. If so-and-so says you do a terrible job there are only two acceptable responses:

1. If his opinion mattered to me I would probably be crying right now

...or...

2. That just proves he doesn't know what the F*#% he's talking about

Either technique works with gringas also

SR
And this big ego profession let me guess comdom vendor in Parque Morazon 8)

I'm the type that discourages conversation on a plane....unless it's with a hot chick.

Funny thing is, last month on my way back, the old lady beside me on the ATL to YYZ leg was originally from the city I'm from so we talked a bit & it was kind of enjoyable.

But I'm with Srilm & Pac, I don't give a rat's ass about anyone's opinion on why I go to CR.

I also try not to have a conversation with the person next to me. This is true whenever I travel, not just to CR. I put my headphones on, listen to music, watch a movie, sleep (or pretend to).

You just never know what you are going to get. Was once sitting in Mcarron Airport In Las Vegas. Heading for home. Sat down across from a young blonde about 25. She was constantly nodding off. She was afraid to fall asleep. Seems she had missed her flight earlier and was sitting here 9-10 hrs later to catch another. She was afaid she would fall asleep and miss another. I told her to go to sleep and I would wake her up when they started to call for the flight. Woke her up and I told her that I was in the front section. As standby she was scheduled to be in the rear. Asked if I would try to save her a seat. After she sat down next to me, had a casual conversation. Initially she claimed she was an interior decorator. Based on her dress and the stuff she was carrying I saw through that pretty quickly. Finally admitted she was working at the Spearmint Rhino. There was only two of us in a 3 seat section. She asked if I minded if she stretched out. Spent the next 4 hrs with her head in my lap. Toward the end of the lap she started getting a little playful. She was home for 2 weeks, had a sick mother. We ended up seeing each other 4-5 times. Have since spent time with her in Vegas since. Sometimes being friendly and striking up a conversation can be rewarding

depends on who is sitting next to me, if it some one who I prefer not to talk to, I start to have a conversation with the only other intelligent person on the plane-and that would be me--

But mostly I try to get some sleep, as sleep may be hard to come by when the plane lands, if you know what I mean....
