Get rid of old ₡1,000 and ₡2,000 notes before they lose their value at the beginning of September. The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) put two glossy bills – a ₡1,000 and a ₡2,000 – into circulation this week. Meanwhile, the bank will begin phasing out the old bills of the same denomination. The new banknotes debuted Monday. On Sept. 1, the old ₡1,000 bill and ₡2,000 bill will no longer have a value. However, they can be redeemed at branches and agencies of local banks, according to a Central Bank press release. By Nov. 1, the old notes can solely be exchanged at the Central Bank headquarters in downtown San José. See the article in Tico Times and pics of the new bills here: http://www.ticotimes.net/Current-Editio ... ne-22-2011 |

Didn't read the article, El Banco Central announced that it devalued the silver plata coins over 1 year ago, and they're still being made and still in circulation. Remember, this is Costa Rica. |

The fact that can still be redeemed after they lose value means that they will still be in circulation. |

Remember, this is Costa Rica. The large silver coins were taken out of circulation. The coins that are now still in circulation are the ones that are aluminum and are the same size as the bronze color ones. The main reason the silver coins were removed from circulation was to standardize the size of the 5, 10, 20 colon coin. |

The new plastic bills are a joke, you can't fold them so I guess I will have to use a billfold ater 11 years of not using. They really know how to screw things up. After all it is CR I don't believe they make a 20 colon coin any more. The 5 and 10 colon coins are all over the street. Nobody picks them up. |

Hey buddy, I saw you on Avenida Central the other day picking up some coins. That was you in your Seahawks starter jacket. Lets go to McDs again for the special this week. Triple Patty! |

Got my first new bill yesterday and they are small, very light and seem hard to count. However, think they will be no problem if you get caught in the rain. Funny thing is, the one I got had the date 2009 on it ![]() |

Yes GT they are plastic, stick together, about 1" shorter than all the other bills and bend but won't fold. Undoubtedly the most phucked up "currency improvement" I've ever seen. ![]() |

Redeeming them after November 1st.....would this be easily doable for a visiting gringo? Would they be redeemed at face value? Could chicas easily redeem them after November 1st if I just gave them away as tips? ![]() |

They are not worthless they can be exchange at the Central Bank which is located on calle 2 between avenida central and avenida 1 it is very convenient to the gulch so getting to where you can exchange them is not a problem. How easy that will be is another matter as I have never done any business at the Central Bank so do not know the procedure to redeem out of circulation money. Yes they will be redeemed at face value. I doubt that chicas will be willing to go through the effort of taking a few mil to the Central Bank and redeeming them. |
