Anybody have Lasik surgery in Costa Rica? I thought there was a doctor advertising on the site, but I must have been mistaken.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I had Lasik in the USA about 8 years ago - life changing, positive experience - cannot say enough good about it. And I have 20/20 and 20/15, still, today.

I've also had good experiences w/ dental work in CR; spent thousands (although many thousands less than the USA), have had crowns, bridges, implants, fillings, cleanings - you name it - so I'm not a virgin to medical tourism and have had positive experiences and have saved thousands. Also have made many (likely over 35) trips to CR over the past 15 years.

However.....Agree or disagree, because its the eyes, this is not a proceedure I would have done outside of the USA - I just rec'd a coupon for a toofer in the mail - as this proceedure is generally NOT covered by insurance, there are perhaps bargans to be had - I would contact providers in your area and ask "what can you do for me - if I pay you cash, if I schedule for a non busy day, if I bring a friend, if I commit TODAY - what can you do for me - just because its a medical proceedure, don't believe for a second its not negociable, because it is. :)

Don't do it! Please research the facts about Lasik before you go any further. I know it sounds great and there are many many happy patients but it is not safe nor perfect and this is your eyesight you are risking. There is a very good reason why they would only operate on one eye at a time just a few years ago - so if something went wrong, you could still see adequately with the other eye.

Ask yourself this question - have you ever seen an optician or ophthalmologist with glasses? Why? There are officials in the FDA who originally approved Lasik and now want it banned, why?

Do the research and then ask yourself if the risks are small enough to go ahead. It's your choice but choose carefully, learn the risks and decide for yourself.

Thanks for the feedback. I have decided that if I do the procedure I will have it done in the US. Although, I did find a doctor in CR that did his residency at Duke. It seems that all on the Dr.'s have the same equipment, but what ultimately made me decide to have it in the US is the after care.

If I lived in CR I don't think I would hesitate to have the procedure. Of course, I would need to get the feel for the Dr. etc.

Thanks,

You're definitely making the right choice not getting the procedure done in CR. Considering how cheap Lasik surgery is today and the technology keeps getting better, I don't see any reason why anyone would want to get it done in CR. My brother had the surgery done for only $2800 with free lifetime enhancements. I planned on getting Lasik myself, but my eye doctor recommended that I wait until I''m 40 years old to have the surgery. I still may go against his advice and get it done, I hate contacts & glasses!
