Post subject:  Bottles of Liquor at the Sportsmen
I noticed that several people have bottles of liquor with their name on it at the Sportsmen. How does that work? Do they buy the bottle there or do they bring it in?

How reasonable are the rates? If you want whiskey/coke do they provide the mixer if you buy the bottle?

Just wondering how this works (and whether other bars do this - since I will be there for a week).

You buy the bar from the SL directly. You dont bring in your own bottle and leave it at the bar, thats just bad form. But then during your stay you can just order a coke and have your bottle brought to you, and they bring you ice and lemons, lime, etc. I think its great that they do that and much more economical over the course of your stay.

I think that a bottle is a few bucks more than you could probably get it more someplace else, but the factors listed above more than make up for. And even the markup wasnt bad from what I remember, 5 or 6 bucks maybe.

Yes, you pay more for the bottle at SL than you would at the super mercado but you pay a lot less than buying by the drink. You have to buy the mixer separately. I think it is a very good deal and you can build your next drink to your taste, whenever you want.

Maybe I am being overly paranoid here, but what is stopping someone from tampering with the contents once its open? I guess my guard is up with the incidents of scopolamine.

At the Sportsmen there are three ways to consume booze and all are a great deal in my opinion. First is the traditional, order your drink and get what the bartender makes for you; pay or run a tab even for your whole stay. Next is the buy the bottle and get the drink made as strong or weak as you want it same deal pay as you go or run it on the tab. Last but certainly is not least is have your own stash in your room and party there with the ladies. I always have a stash of Red Bull and Jägermeister and a bottle or two of Baileys to loosen things up with the ladies. If you need mixer for your own stash the bar will gladly sell you some and even give you ice and glasses. It is not cool though to bring the bottle to the bar and start pouring. It is amazing once word gets out that you have drinks of choice in the room the convoy to the room begins sometimes with great deals to be had or even freebies. As far as worrying about tampering, if someone wants to do you in, its probably because you acted so stupid and were on the edge of total inebriation and were about to put yourself out of your own misery anyways. The Sportsmen is safer than any other bar I can imagine even those at home. Just stay smart out there.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think of having a bottle in the room "for the ladies" - good idea. Now I'll just have to find a liquor store.

Not difficult - one at the airport right by baggage claim; also liquor (and beer) can be purchased at any Mas y Menos, Auto Mercado (Costa Rican supermarket chains - at least 2 Mas y Menos located very close to the gulch; one in fact up the street on Ave Central from the Presidente Hotel - one on the way to the Mercado, one located the opposite direction - anyone can direct you).

This is a good idea if your a hotel guest or a regular that lives here and frequents often.

I,personally am happy with the 10% CRT discount, which I always ask for. I like to throw a little money the way of the SL as I appreciate the venue and am just happy they don't ban me on one of my drunken tirades, which is about once a week :oops:

Yes, I would agree that you are being overly paranoid. How's it different from any other bottle of liquor in a bar? It would be easy for bartenders to tamper with any bottle of liquor behind the bar, although unlawful and counterproductive.

Great topic...

I, as most of those who know me, drink Centenario XX year old Fundación on the rocks.
However, since the SL does not have in stock, I will purchase at least two bottles (depending on how long my trip is) at the Duty Free store. There are three (3) of them in the airport. Two in the terminal level at each end of the building, and one located in the baggage area immediately to the right as you go inside the receiving area.
I have found that local and foreign rums are much cheaper than anywhere else, while foreign booze such as Johnny Walker, Chivas Regal, and others, while still less expensive than in the US, are a little higher than I would expect for a Duty Free store.

Drinking XX year old Fundación straight on the rocks is like drinking manaá from the Gods. There are times though, when I feel like slowing down a little and will get a Bacardí white and Coca Light (no fruit) from the bar. All the bartenders have a great memory and will always keep your glass fresh. These as well as any drinks (and/or food) I may buy for a chica are added to my Bar Tab which is included in the overall bill and paid when I check out.

The SL Staff, from Bill at the very top to the maintenance Ticos at the very bottom, everyone there are a true CLASS ACT.

Gentlemen,

For clarification, liquor bottles purchased at Sportsmens Lodge can be on the bar and stored at the bar. Bottles puchased elsewhere can be used in the rooms if you are a guest at SL only.
