I see in the trip reports and girls review sections more and more guys using "Tica" and "Chica" interchangeably. "Tica" does not mean prostitute. A Tica is a Costa Rican female. Some Ticas get pretty indignant when they realize gringos are using that word to mean a hooker. After all, some of the girls are Ticas, but many are Nicas, Colombianas, Dominicanas, et al, and I've even encountered a few Gringas working at the HDR and SL. I once watched a bar fight in a pickup bar west of el centro. Can't remember the name of it, but it's a place mostly frequented by Ticos. The fight was between a Tico and gringo over the gringo's mis-use of Tica. My two Colones worth.... |

[b][u] Big +1 I've noticed it too, and have posted as such - really makes you look clueless; some who have used the term claim to "know Spanish" - somehow, I doubt it -  And as I've pointed out more than once, you really piss off people down there using the terms interchangably. Another example of preventable stupidity

I think the formula is easier if one considers that being called a Tica DOES NOT make a Costa Rican woman a hooker, yet a hooker in Costa Rica can be (and usually is) a Tica. It makes sense to me... but I seldom worry about such little issues. |

Don't overcomplicate things by thinking about formulas and disrespect and such, folks. I have found this to be true in all walks of life - If you act like an asshole to people, you can expect to be treated like an asshole in return. A little respect and consideration works wonders.
