Quote: "Costa Rica treats less than 3% of human waste and discharges 97% of the sewage into the rivers that flow into the sea and constitute little more than contaminated sewage ditches open (...) placing the country among the five worst in Latin America. And the country is going backwards. "The tourist brochures do not tell the whole story", writes Weitzenkorn. Wikileaks reports obtained by La Nacion gives a glimpse of how American diplomats portrayed Costa Rica in private, and would have never made it public as demonstrated by the released cables. In the cables, the Americans judge and analyze everything from "bloated" public institutions, to the "deteriorating" health system, "dilapidated" national infrastructure and "decrepit" road system. The sad part of the cables is that they are accurate, describing a Costa Rica that most Americans, other foreigners and Costa Ricans themselves know well. In the cables, U.S. diplomats describe Costa Rica's democracy as "dysfunctional" and "hyper legalistic". The good news is those of us that invested in Diacort are doing quite well. ![]() |

Costa Rica wants to project a 'green' image, but it's only an image. If there's a buck (colon) to be made or one to save by fouling the environment, it's going to happen. Image is everything to those that own and run the place, reality means nothing. That's why we get the symbolic raids of MPs and the Rey. All kabuki theater. Since she's been in office, the Prez has done a ton of photo ops. As far as anything substantial, I can't think of anything actually accomplished. |
