For the first time in the 7 years that I have been living here in CR,I have overstayed my visa by a couple of weeks. I will be leaving CR for 5 days this Friday. I have a friend here who had a huge problem doing the same thing some time ago. Does anyone here have any suggestions so I won't get into trouble? The info posted on amcostarica is helpful,but almost impossible to understand aside from carrying at least $1000 in cash. Iwill do that. |

On exit, don't think you will have a problem. On coming back in, as long as you have a return ticket out of the country and have money, they probably won't say anything either. Odds of an immigration official actually noticing you overstayed the visa is slim to none IMHO. If you can say in general, what got your friend into problems? On exit or entry and was it for an expired visa on a previous stay?? And just for you, suggestions so you never have this problem again. 1) Get married to a Tica 2) Have a baby here You can now roll on the floor and laugh out loud if you wish... |

Your suggestions 1 and 2 are only worth two ha's.....haha. Your serious suggestions are what I think also. I already have a bus ticket to Nicaragua that doesn't have an expiration date. |

VB, I do not anticipate any problem or extra costs going out or coming back in. The $1,000 is unnecessary and perhaps more dangerous than helpful. This I believe after coming back-in last month after overstaying my prior 90 day visa for 8 days. Bill |

Which bus company are you riding? Usually the passports are collected, stamped and returned w/o problem. However you may want to check or hopefully someone else who did a visa run recently can chime in. |

You have a big investment in the country, aren't you worried? CV, I never wanted to do/compile the paperwork plus be compelled to join the Caja. I was always ready to go visit family & friends in the states or travel regionally after 90 days before last year. I applied last July 2010 and am just days away from having my first CR residency card in my hand. |

VB, Keep us posted as to what you discover on this subject. I am in the same boat as you and I am following this thread closely. I am leaving very early Saturday morning on Copa for Colombia (with shots and card). My 90 day is NOT overdue (yet). I have not left the country in over 1 year although my passport has all of the legal immigration stamps. I have also heard of good friends starting to get hassled more and more at the borders. Sometimes they cruise on through with no problems, other times not. Like you I will carry an open dated bus ticket out of the country (Panama). Note: The place to purchase these tickets is: TicoBus Terminal - Paseo Colón 200 mts north & 100 mts west from Torre Mercedes across from Funeraria del Magesterio National Hopefully, I will have additional information before Friday? I am going to the Ministerio of Securidad today to get fingerprinted. This will allow my lawyer to provide me with paperwork that states that I am in the process of applying for permanent residency. Will I have it in time of this trip? I doubt it but we'll see? I also have a few other bits of information that I am tracking down and will provide feedback if applicable. I'm going to wing it my first six months in Costa Rica and just come back to the states every 60 days or so. After that I will find a good abogado and explore my options if I hit the six month point (that's my tipping point where I'll decide if CR makes sense for me long term). Until then, I'll just revel in carnality. |

Vegas Bob, I hope that you were fortunate enough to have made to back to Costa Rica, I needed to put closure to this post in lieu of my previous comments. I just returned to Costa Rica. My first trip out in over a year although as I previously commented my passport is 100% perfect. (I have had immigration inspect it numerous times) First, as I was sitting in Panama City for my 20 minute layover I decided to inspect my new passport stamps. Muy Tico, I noticed that I did not have an exit stamp for CR. I arrive at the MDE airport and got my entry stamp with no problems. Skip to today, my MDE flight with Copa is scheduled to depart at 9:16am. After first gettng my tax-free exit stamp for Colombia I now present my passport for my boarding pass. First question, "where is your Ministry of Salud card?" Second question, "where is your CR exit stamp?" Immediate third question, "where is your ticket for leaving CR?" Gracias a DÃos para Español Back with no problens. All CR wanted to know was how long you staying? Pura Vida EdB |
