I did have to divert to Moscow for a conference, but the mood was decidedly low-key. Consensus is that this was Chechens, but nobody has claimed responsibility yet. I can't say much more, as the event is still under investigation, but I am totally impressed by the cool heads over this event. SR Wouldn't the TSA have their "2 cents" in something like this, too? Not to make light of this unfortunate event, but I would have expected a knee-jerk reaction response from them like "prohibiting baggage of any kind from touching the floor of an airport." |

The FAA has nothing to do with airport security protocols.... airports don't fly ![]() |

Ya, they have more of an interest in the "secure" side of the airport... or "airside" as it's called. Any area that has direct influence on active flights. The baggage claim areas of most airports are not in the secure area, so the FAA usually doesn't have any dealings with the procedures there. I'm sure they have opinions though... lol. In fact, that's one of the biggest faults, IMO, with the FAA... they can't seem to settle on one primary role. On one hand they have a mandate to promote aviation and on the other hand they are supposed to police the FAA regulations and punish the violators. Seems like conflicting interests to me. |

The TSA function was once handled by Civil Aviation Security, a branch of the FAA. The FAA was responsible for oversight of the gate security folks, Wakkenhut and the like. As for the conflict between support of aviation and policing the airlines, we got all sideways when we "privatized" airline inspections and decided it would be a good idea (cheap) to authorize an employee of the airline to conduct inspections previously done by FAA employees...as long as the reports were filed on time. Guess what became important, inspections or reports? Keep your head down SR! |
