Is there a Magicjack type of device available in Costa Rica? One that would give me a Costa Rican number so that we can call friends and they can call us without paying international rates.

As usual I show my computer ignorance by my response here. I don't understand your problem. Doesn't the combination of a cellphone with a CR phone number for incoming and outgoing calls in CR. Then use a computer phone such as Skype or Magic Jack (my preference) for incoming or outgoing calls in the U.S. or Canada with cheap rates to other Countries.

Magic Jack only offers U.S. and Canadian numbers. Though they may have resellers in CR, the device will still have a number will be based out of the U.S. or Canada.

You can buy one here and ship it down or on your next trip take it with you. But to answer your question if they offer CR numbers, no, they do not at this time.

No problem. Let me clarify.

If we had a Magicjack-type of device that we could plug into our computer in the US (with a CR number), then our family and friends in CR could call our CR number for the cost of a local call. And we could call them for free as well.

It's not that big a deal, my inlaws already have a US magicjack so we can talk whenever, but most of our extended family and friends in CR don't have a computer, much less a MJ, so we have to pay to call. While it's only like 7¢ a minute, it adds up. We make a lot of calls monthly, so I'm looking at ways to lower/eliminate my bill.

You could set up your CR friends with a MagicJack, giving them a US number as long as they have a computer.
