Post subject:  House Hunters International Goes To Costa Rica

I am a fan of a TV show called House Hunters International.
(Basic premise of the show is to follow people who are looking for homes in other countries.)
Quite a few episodes have been filmed in Costa Rica.
But, I wanted to tell you about an episode that I recently saw that was very interesting..

Tim is single…in his mid-forties…an attorney from San Diego CA.
Tim is looking for a house in Costa Rica so he can have regular visits with his 3-year-old daughter.
Currently, he visits once a month and stays in a hotel close to San Jose where he sees his daughter.
He feels that he can have a better father-daughter relationship if he has a regular residence.
Tim’s budget is about $550,000…He ends up in a gated community near Playa Hermosa.

As the 30 minute show progresses, we only see quick glimpses of his daughter, as she is being carried away by her mother whose face we never get to see.
So, it’s pretty obvious that Tim does not have a relationship with the girl’s mother.

So, now Tim has a half-million dollar house in a gated community that sits empty for a good portion of the year. The Ch*ld and her mother live in less-than-ideal conditions near San Jose.

Makes me wonder if the mother might try to insert the Ch*ld and herself into the new house on a regular basis. Would the courts support the mother in her efforts to relocate her daughter into a safer environment in house owned by her father? Since he now owns a home in Costa Rica, is he under increased obligations to support his daughter?

Although Tim is an attorney in the US, the legal system in Costa Rica can be a bit challenging for the average Gringo to negotiate. He may be asking for a load of problems…All in the name of trying to be a good father.

So, I was curious if anyone else has seen this episode (Usually airs on a station called HGTV in the US.) or if you think Tim has created a problem for himself.

I have seen it. I wonder how much of these episodes are reality and how many are scripted and staged to some degree.

What I wonder is how many people have been led down the garden path of homeownership in a foreign country by this and similar rah-rah shows? I have to continually talk down the lurid ambitions of my local liquor store owner when he sees something on Costa Rica. He has his head so stuffed full of dream living in Paradise, he doesn't want to hear/ won't listen to how fraught with peril financial or otherwise it can be. And all because of HHI.
Do they ever go back 2-5 years later to see how the dreams play out or would that be too much a dream-buster? And do they bring up questions of law such as Brother 67SuperSport has posed? I'd guess--NEVER!

There's one episode where a guy that's never even been to CR decides to buy a 400k+ house in Jaco. Someone mentioned it on here before, he was asking why all the houses had bars on the windows

If I were to stay in CR for an extended period of time, I would choose Circus Cardboard Inn.

That was too funny and very well done. He should have had Domingo the cigar guy in there too with
Luis.
