Try giving the Hugo Boss Shoe Shine Guy 200 Colones to keep all the bums away from you when you walk back to the Presidente. It works. Gut Bucket guy and his singer friend are also useful. King |

I throw coins away from where I 'm walking and they always go after the coins. I make sure no one gets close enough to touch me |

how sad that avoiding the beggars turns into sport.... we were eating in the all-night diner on the corner one night and the beggar lady kept hovering outside waiting for us......we decided to exit by going in three different directions to see what would happen....she froze for a second, evaluated things, and then chased my friend. I didn't know whether to be relieved or offended. |

I tell them to Phuck off and look at them crazy like I'm getting ready to beat the shit out of them. It doesn't necessarily get rid of them but I believe anything else only encourages them. If you throw coins they may chase them but they will definitely be back for more, if not with you then with the next gringo that walks down the street. |

speaking of the Hugo Boss shoeshine guy, wasn't he once a member of a somewhat famous puerto rican boy band in the 80's??? that guy cracks me up! |

I know he really cracks me up. The funniest thing about him is that he usually changes to "formal attire" in the evening. I have no problem giving him or any of the "GOOD BUMS" money for body guard services. It's well worth 200 colones to have him keep the others off you. Recently, I had one asshole follow me for 2 blocks. Hire Hugo Boss Guy and they won't phuck with you. Sort of an unwritten rule that beggars have down there. Other good body guards include all the musicians (gut bucket 1 and 2, percussion guy, and banjo guy) |

King Costa wrote: I have no problem giving him or any of the "GOOD BUMS" money for body guard services. It sounds funny to talk about "GOOD BUMS" vs. "BAD BUMS". A recent thread mentioned tipping some of the better musicians. As many of you know I usually take a hard line about encouraging these characters, but I agree wholeheartedly it is perfectly fine to tip guys who provide a worthwhile service, whether it be bodyguard service or enjoyable music. Let's just not encourage any beggars (something for nothing), phony Salvation Army nurses, ceramic flute salesmen (do you really want to stick something he's been playing in your mouth?), guys who create noise at 7AM or guys you want to pay to just go away (did I leave anyone out?) |

The shoe shine guy's boy-band roots were apparent one evening when a hip-hop song came on the stereo and he burst into a spastic Vanilla Ice dance in the doorway....one of the funniest things I've ever seen.... that's ricky martin alright.... |

On my last trip, I ran into the burned boy CLEAR ACROSS TOWN! I have no idea how he got there, but he must have decided there weren't enough gringos in the gulch. |

You bunch of cheap bastards. You should be so lucky not to have whatever makes them have to beg on the streets. Either give them a few colones or not but certainly don't voice your self rightous feelings on this forum. This is not pura vida nor the behavior of gentleman |

Agree Admin.... Point here is to encourage these people that need money to provide worthwhile service for a fee. Bodyguarding and Quality Music qualfies as worthwhile service. End of point. |
