I did this last year but forgot what I did but in order to not get charged boatloads of $$$$ is the main thing to have "Data Roaming" in the "OFF" position?

My only usage will be to send and receive text messages from the US. Not planning to use it for phone calls (unless big emergency) nor for internet browsing or anything like that.

Also--my Ipad should work fine there too I assume right? it's the Wi-Fi with 3G kind and I assume as long as there's a network (I'll be at SL) then it should be no differennt than anyother laptop. Do I have that right?

Thx.

I use mine in airplane mode and then turn on wifi. You can not send or recieve normal texts, but you can get emails and get on the internet on most hotel networks. I also carry a small audio docking station for playing music. If you want to recieve texts turning off data roaming will save definitely save you major dollars. Using it as I described will cost you nothing at all...

As I recall from last year I think each outgoing text was 0.50 cents and any incoming were free or they also gave you a package option for $10.00 which allowed you 50 outgoing texts which included text with pictures. I don't plan to use the phone part at all since all my communication can be done by text and e-mail on my laptop. I just seem to recall that if you forget to have your setting correctly set on ur Iphone you could surprise yourself with a $700 or $1000 phone bill and I thought it had to do with making sure Data Roaming was set in the OFF position.

Gringos post had all the correct info. I purchased the $5.99 plan so that if had to call someone it was $1.99 instead of $2.99 a minute. Yikes
Purchase the plan before your trip, and then cancel it when you get back home.

If you set your iPad to just use WiFi while at the SL, it will work just fine. There's a WLAN in the clubhouse area, as well as one in the Mansion area. I think the Mansion one is working faster today, but that might change depending on the number of guests in each part of the building.

I use Vonage Mobile on my iPhone to call back to the US for free via WiFi, and only cut on WiFi but not cellular service or data. I'm not a big TXT user, so I don't mind not being able to send or receive them during the time I'm out of the country.
