I did a search regarding ATM fees in CR and came up with a variety of answers.

My local bank charges me $1.50 per transaction ($800) max in one day....no problem).

What I need to know is what the CR Banks charge for using their ATM machines. Do most accept Cirrus, Plus, and Star ATM accounts ? And are both Visa & Master Charge ATM cards accepted ? And what us the maximum you can withdraw in one day ?

Thanks for your insight.

Ye Old Man

My ATM card (a VISA debit card) is on the Interlink/NYCE/PLUS network and I've never had any problems using it in Costa Rica (San Jose and Jaco Beach).

I have used it at the airport, Del Rey hotel, Morazan hotel and Colonial Casino. I have also used it at the Mas x Menos in Jaco.

The limit on the machine (ATH or ATM) varies from about 100,000 to 200,000 colones per transaction. The daily limit is set by your bank.

The fees from my bank (Wachovia) are usually about $2 per transaction.
I've also used my card in Colombia without any problems.

One note, make sure you use a 4-digit PIN. I've heard that some banks (might be Canadian) have 5-digit and these might not work.

It would depends on which ATM you used. ATM's in the Delrey do not charge a service fee for using them. The Colonial ATM charge a small fee (don't quite remember..maybe 600 colones). The last time I used an ATM in the Morazan hotel, there was no service fee either.

I would recommend you using the Delrey ATMs...since you're going to be there anyway. So the only charge you should get comes from your bank.

I like using the ATM at the Del Rey since I am there all the freakin time anyway.

I used it on this trip Sept 29 - Oct 3 and my charges were $1.00 per transaction (which my bank charges) and the exchange rate was just shy of 443 colones per $1. Not bad at all.

Actually JB - the chicas are getting very enterprising in their sales tactics. I heard they are actually using General Motors as a model for their business.

On Friday night, I was offered by a Colombiana who wanted to close a deal a choice of 4500 colones off or a Toda La Noche at 0% interest.

I didn't know what to do.... well yes I did.
