Ok, this may be petty, but it pissed me off...

I travel a lot and always carry a small umbrella in my carry-on... My last trip to CR in September it was no problem when I checked into SJO for my return flight to HELL... This time, they took the umbrella at security... Like WTF I asked... New regulation they say that just went into effect... The security officer took it dropped it into a large container with other kidnapped umbrellas behind her station... Look for these along Avenida Centro for sale sometime soon...

Pisses me off since I've had this one high-end umbrella for many years and now it's gone... :?

Same thing happened to Atlwingman (my wingy) on our return in October. It is a crap rule but apparently they are enforcing it consistently.

Peace,

DR

Wow. Thanks for posting. I brought an expensive umbrella with me from ATL about 3 trips ago. I'd been real pissed if they had taken it.

Actually has been for at least a couple years, the enforcement has been hit or miss. They took mine once in CR and once leaving DR but I got away with it the other 10 times. :?

I've got about 5 of the Tico umbrellas here at home that I brought back back when I used to check bags.

Not familiar with a Tico Umbrella but it evokes images of everything from something between a cocktail umbrella and a real umbrella to a plastic bag!

Same thing happened to me just 2 weeks ago... yes, I was pissed also. Fortunately I had one of the cheapies.

I'll be back in 9 days. I plan on bringing (or buying another cheapie in CR). I will also bring it back to the airport and let the guy throw it in the bucket. But, I'll shred the damn thing at my hotel before I throw it in the carryon luggage first. I figure they're probably taking em home. Either way, nobody will be able to use it.

It'll really be bad if I make it threw the security... then I'll be stuck with a junk umbrella.

The muy, muy tico thing is, if they are now taking umbrellas this time of year, to let's say sell, isn't rainy season over? I brought 1 umbrella to CR and it took me 6 hours to lose it. Since then, plastic $1 store raincoat, works great.

And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

Sometimes it's worth it to check a bag. :P I always put my travel umbrella in my checked bag when returning from CR, you don't need it anymore anyway. :D

Just had the same thing happen on Nov. 1 when checking in at SJO at Continental desk. They asked if I had an umbrella in my carry-on, which I did. She suggested that I put it in my checked bag as it would be confiscated if it was in my carry-on.
Very strange as this is the first time this was an issue in my 10 previous departures out of SJO in the past 2 years.
OTOH, my amigo that I was travelling with has a metal plate in his hip. He always sets off the metal detectors. This same day at SJO, he walked right thru the metal detector without setting it off....

Like The Professor turned coconuts into a computer, so can some McGyver-wannabe turn an umbrella into a lethal weapon and take over a plane. It makes perfect Costa Rican sense to me.
