Hola everyone. I have a travel-related question. I was travelling a few weeks ago and lost a photocopy of my passport...my physical passport is safe and sound, I JUST lost a photocopy of the infromation page of it. Am I safe? Is there any real risk of somebody using this information to produce a counterfeit of my passport or am I just worrying too much here?

I'm guessing it is not a big deal, but I would appreciate any responses/insights from anyone!

Thanks.

If it were possible to counterfeit a U.S. passport using just a photo copy of the info page the proprietors of those "little hole in the wall" copy shops in San Jose would be the richest people in the country. I would not sweat it.

If anyone knows how to accomplish that feat PM me and we can open a little copy shop on avenida central and make our fortune.

Though not mentioned by the original poster, wouldn't the possibility of identity theft be a valid concern?

Doesn't identify theft occur with purloined social security numbers? Doubt that anyone could so much damage with your passport number. They would have that and your date of birth but nothing else of real value.

I don't know (fortunately) if Social Security numbers are the only starting point for identity theft. Maybe the bad guys can get Social Security numbers via passports.
I hope I never find out the hard way

There's no real way somebody can get a social security number through your passport number.....even so Financial Identity Theft is not a big concern of mine since I notified the credit bureaus to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.

My only real concern was the counterfeiting one, but it seems like there is a very very low risk of anything like that happening. Plus I was reading some travel forums and it seems a lot of people actually give out photocopies of their passports to hostels/hotels in many places like Eastern Europe and Africa and such to show their identity.....so I guess all is well.

More responses are welcome

I wouldn't worry. There is little they can do with a photocopy of the passport :)

I agree that the only thing you really have to worry about is the possibility of identity theft.
