I believe the data from another thread needs to be a common place read at this point in the "game":

Yes, A CRT member was assaulted at knifepoint walking at night alone from the Sl to the Castillo. He wishs to remain anonymous. He is a highly trained profesional and apparently broke one's arm and busted up the other, but did sustain a knife wound to the hand that required a hospital visit. As I say repeatedly, taxis are very cheap insurance and I do not reccomend walking at night in San Jose.

The trannies seem to be acting up again. There have been several assaults and fights between Ticos and trannies that resulted in police on the scene over the last month or so.

Last time the trannie got thick in the city, I heard they just sort of disappeared. Maybe time for another cleansing. :)

I walk this many times in a day and into the evening. I cross the street and walk on the other side if something seems amiss, and I DO PROFILE. I have also walked from HDR at 1am to Castillo......not going to do that again. Was the monger wearing an Affliction or Ed Hardy shirt?

I've made that walk alone many times. But, the incident is sobering.

I sometimes carry pepper spray with me when I walk the streets of San Jose.

I hope I never have to use it.

There is a gun shop on Calle 5 between Ave1 and Central Ave that sells pepper spray.

I think its about $10 bucks for a little bottle.

Just make sure you don't try and take it home on the airplane with you.

Give it to another brother or a chica as Tip before you leave.

Pepper Spray! LOL! Yous guys are funny.
Youre going to piss someone off with pepper spray ladies.

Why dont you just be more careful when you travel to a foreign country. Walking around looking like "Tommy Tourist" from Jersy with all your American brand clothing and stuff. Looking like a fresh roasted rotiessorie chicken on a platta!

I walk that section between Castillo and Sportsman's two or three times a day when Im there and have not had a problem.

If your stupid stay at home in the US.
If your scared git on yo knees and say a prayer.

Last option.

Barrio Mexico has a lot of ferreterias/ hardware stores where you can purchase a nice short "Rambo" styled machete. Keep your receipt and you can return it in your checked baggage home.

Dont buy it if you dont know how to use it though!

Squeal like a pig! Wrong movie?

fiddy gone git somebawdy hurt

Box cutter is a great little carry around and you can always explain having it on you some way. I'm not out a whole lot after dark in Jaco, except in a few of my spots to watch football.

I have made that walk at the least 25 times after dark. If I have to take a cab it just seems like I do not belong in CR.

I do take one from The DR and KL at night. But Castillo, that is like two blocks with a big government building with a gaurd in a both 50 yards away.

I have walked a many a lady down that walk also. Or to walk from LaArmistead to the SL. Damm it just does not make sense.

When I know I can not make that walk. I will have to find another Vacation spot.

I always stay at the Castillo and like to hang out evenings at the sportmans bar. I have made that walk either alone or with chicas countless ( hundreds?) times. Never had trouble. Of course it can happen anywhere but unless attacks on that route become a problem, I will probably still take my chances.
