Costa Rica is changing its currency
Costa Rica is in the process of changing its paper currency. In the next few months six new bills will enter into circulation. The current old bills of ¢1.000, ¢2.000, ¢5.000, and ¢10.000 will be replaced, and two new bills valued at ¢20.000 and ¢50.000 will be introduced. The bills will be of different sizes and colors and will have an ecological image on one side relating to one of the six major ecosystems of the country and on the reverse will present an image of an important historical person of our nation. Old bills will be gradually phased out of circulation........

Just for clarification: the other denominations will continue, with design changes to the 1.000 (rojo); and to the others as well.

May want to pick up a new bill in each of the current denomination for your collection.

Good luck breaking the 50,000 bill. Many local places (I'm not talking about HDR, SL, or most MP's) can't change 10K now. The pulperias and small mom/pop shops are going to have a hard time breaking the larger bills. Plus, I expect many of them will outright refuse to accept them due to possible counterfitting. These places can't take a 50K hit if they accept a fake bill, so they may err on the side of caution and just not accept them at all.

Good thing for tourists is that we won't have to have a pile of 10k bills when changing only a few hundred dollars. :lol:

Or get a current 1, 2, 5 & 10 mil note, in good condition, before they are taken out of circulation and keep those in your collection.

Once more are into circulation then more will have change.

10 mil note has been in circulation for at least a decade. As Orange stated local pulperias and small shops still have a hard time coming up with change if you only make a small purchase. I doubt that time will make the 50 mil note an easy thing to use at small shops and ferias.

Circulation of the new 20 mil note has been delayed according to an article in todays Inside Costa Rica.

The bank would not provide any details of the delay, just saying through a spokesperson that it will hold a press conference at 9am Monday on the issue. The 50 mil note would seem to be a disaster waiting to happen.

Excitement among merchants and consumers has not been overwhelming, as many consider the new notes will be difficult to handle, too large of a domination to give or get change.

Anyone who has attempted to make a small purchase or pay for a taxi with or get change for a ¢10.000 colones note can attest to the problems of its acceptance, the ¢20.000 will be even worse.

The Central Bank will be issuing some 30 million notes in the economy.


The article raises the same concerns that have noted in this thread about the ability of many to able provide change.

Are they planning on taking out an equal amount in old notes from circulation when they introduce these notes or are they just going to print money without replacement?

Speaking of the older colon notes, anyone know if any of the older 5, 50 colon bills are worth anything? Is there a collector market in CR?

I still have a couple of those older ones in my collection, just held them from years ago after never using them.
