I did a quick search and didn't find another thread on this. If one is out there, please don't flame too hard. What's your favorite CR beer? Before my last trip I remembered Imperial and Pilsen very fondly, but upon return they didn't hold up. Are the other beers (Heineken for example) brewed in CR? How much more expensive are they? Do they taste the same as the ones you get in the states? |

The Pilsen isn't too bad if you can get it ice cold. Drank Bavaria Dark for a while, not too bad. The Heinekin is brewed in Costa Rica and doesn't taste exactly like it does back home. With my redneck background, I enjoy being able to buy some Miller Genuine Draft and Old Milwaukee too. A lot of bars have Tona, from Nicaragua, which I like. Everybody has different tastes, so test them out. Definitely try the Bavaria Gold. Was a little disappointed when I first moved here that there wasn't better beer, but go used to it. Even like to drink it with ice, salt and lime juice at times. A shame we don't have a beer like Presidente from the DR.. |

Miamiheller wrote: Have you tried Bavaria yet? mh I really like Bavaria Lt. (hey, when you drink 50 of those fukers, light is nice). But, I am not allowed to drink it because the ticas y ticos make fun of me. I am serious. If I drink a light beer in CR, it's like I am drinking a Zima. Reminds me of how my ex gf's family(Mexican) would judge me as a man, not by how I treat my K*ds or my gf, but how much hot sauce I can put in my mouth at one time ![]() |

Quote: Are the other beers (Heineken for example) brewed in CR? The Heineken & Corona served locally are both brewed in Costa Rica under licensing agreements. |

According to Florida Bebidas, Costa Rica's national brewery, the Cerveceria Costa Rica, produces around 39.624.807.85 gallons of beer a year. That amount does not include the imported beers like Corona and US beers. The success of the Cerveceria is to provide beer drinkers a variety of brands that include: Imperial, Imperial Light, Pilsen, Pilsen 6.0, Bavaria Gold, Bavaria Light, Bavaria Dark, Heineken (under license), Rock Ice, Rock Ice Limón and the non-alcoholic brew, Kaiser. The brewery also has exclusive rights to Toña and Gallo beers. Imperial is Costa Rica's favourite beer The brewery is also the first in Latin America authorized to brew Heineken and among the first to introduce "light", "ice brew" and non alcoholic beers. According to the print daily, La Teja, the national brewery is getting ready to launch a new beer, the "Rock Ice Golden Monkey". Although no information on the new beer could be found on the Florida Bebidas website, the La Teja says it will in the market next week and is similar to the Rock Ice but with a twist of "mangostán" (mangosteen" a tropical evergreen tree, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garcinia_mangostana) In addition to beers, Cerverceria also produces the flavored alcoholic beverages like Smirnoff Ice, Bamboo and Cuba Libre. Florida Bebidas, in addition to alcoholic drinks, also produces water drinks under the brands "Agua Cristal", Tropical and Tampico juice drinks, Maxi Malta, Maxx Energy, Milory and Nector fruits drinks, Kern's, Fun-C, Fruko. In addition, Florida Bebidas produces and distributes in Costa Rica Pepsi, 7Up, Everess, Mirinda, Gatorate, H2OH and Lipton. And refried canned beans under the brand name Frijoles Ducal. |

At home, I'm a "beer and a bump" guy, so Imperial to wash down the Scotch works for me. Anybody tried Pilsen 6.0?--sounds potent. BTW, Harry's Bar Poas has both the Pilsen and Tona--priced right at Happy Hour too. |
