Post subject:  How do you ask this en espanol?

Dame en espanol. My spanish is really bad, yet much better than it was when I made my first trip 4 yrs ago. I picked up a "little" with 2 yrs going to CR/MDE. "Very little" living in MIA. "Most" dating a Mexicana for three yrs who spoke perfect english. In other words, I got no spanish skills.

As I prepare for my "return" trip, I want to get one phrase down. I have never had a problem doing it without any spanish, but i always had help(wingman with perfect spanish), or she was just fking ugly.

How do I say this en Tica spanish?(after talking to her for 30-60 min knowing we "connect")

"Look, you really seem like a cool girl. Someone I would like to hang out with tonight. If you are looking to hookup with as many guys as possible, I completely understand, and good luck to you. But, if you would like to hang out with me tonight, go out drinking/casino/club, whatever WE both like, I think we could have a great time. I only want TLN. You can leave in the A.M. with money in your pocket, and look back at it knowing you had a great time with a great guy. Or, you can hunt and "try" to catch one trick and go home wishing you would have taken my offer".

I'm not asking how much to offer, most TLN are best when she doesn't ask, taken care of after BK/lunch.

How would you guys ask this in Tica talk? (I can translate on the internet) Thanks....

My two cents:

Hope this helps,

mh

All the above is good, however, I think you could probably use the more familar tu form in place of usted given the nature of the discussion. 8)

You could, but ticas and ticos typically use "usted" even for people they know well. If you're dealing with a colombiana, venezolana or dominicana, "tu" is definitely acceptable. With a tica, I'd stick with "usted" unless you've known her forever and a day -- or if she starts "tuteandote" right off the bat.

Not for nothing, but remember to ask this question early enough in the evening so she can call around and have somebody do child-care overnight. Everything else being equal, this may be a deal-killer THAT DAY.

It should be mentioned that just as important as memorizing this phrase is delivery. Given the casual nature to this dialog (which I like btw, ) you need to make sure you can deliver that in a way that you would in English.

But (if I may) I would omit : Or, you can hunt and "try" to catch one trick and go home wishing you would have taken my offer".

Your coming off pretty sincere and a back handed comment like this is just ugly (in general)..

Any chica willing to take your offer is well apprised of her options....

Just sayin'

I agree with MH here. I also noticed that the Ticos and Ticas speak more formally than other Latinos. The newer Nicas and Colombianas seemed to speak more informally, however once they've been in Costa Rica for a while they might start speaking more like the locals.

It's best to take your cue from the chica whether to use 'tu' or 'usted'. However if you just decide to use the 'tu' form, they won't look down on this because most Latinos use this in casual situations.

The Ticos do use the more formal way of addressing each other, Usted and Vos. But there quality of of Spanish is usually less proper due to the fact they speak pachuco, a slang that they use often. But in any case MH gave you great advice.

I gotta ask... you don't want to talk $$$ until after the fact... during breakfast or lunch. Why would you want to potentially set yourself up for major drama and issues or is $300 (or some other $$$ amount that is out of the ballpark) for TLN acceptable to you and not an issue?

MH..... your version is bounds better than the previous one. Naturally, it all depends on how things hve progressed so far with the chica up until that point. However, I like the direct approach for a TLN deal and I especially like the fact that although plata is mentioned, no specific figure/amount is mentioned. So, although she knows she will get paid, more than likely she will be thinking every now and then that she will have to perform well to get as much as possible.

Good translation my man.

Very valid point, and I should not have made that statement with such a cavalier attitude.

I said "most TLN are best". What I meant/should have said was, "the best TLN I have had...."

They are few and far between. Normally with someone I know well and a repeat hookup/TLN/hanging out all evening. So, that statement didn't really have anything to do with the original/main question I had.

By no means did I mean that I am doing tln and the girls love me so much they don't care. Not even close. It has happened (money, not thay they loved me), but they were as wasted as me, and probably just happy to have a place to crash   . That said, I guess I was lucky, because thats a game I have no interest in playing. I gotta know the score. Point taken Berk
