The vast majority of "Cuban" cigars sold in Costa Rica are not Cuban. They are made in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I have seen the fake box factories and the torcedors rolling cigars and putting fake labels on the cigars. If you want a real Cuban cigar, Costa Rica is the last place you should look. Costa Rica foreign tobacco taxes, cigar consumption tax and import duties would make a real Cuban cigar cost more here than in London or Montreal. The only real Cubans here are the ones someone has purchased in a duty free store and brought in with them. (Many claim they are doing so, but few actually are). Habanos, S.A. does not export to Costa Rica. There are companies here that claim to sell you "Cuban" cigars in the cigar stores and over the internet. The internet companies claim they are taking the bands off and sending them to you in a separate envelope. They are selling cheap Costa Rican cigars and they are ripping you off. You have been warned. Your best bet for a decent cigar down here is to try the local manufacturers. Some are very good. |

I've been told by associates in the Cigar export business that it is hard to find an authentic Cuban cigar here. The one cigar shop across from the Morazon and another 50 metros down towards the pedesrian mall sell autentic. The street stuff is made here. I know the cat who makes them, knows how to roll a good cigar, but not worth the price. I don't smoke cigars but those who make it a practice don't find anything special about Cubans except that they are contraband in the States. It's like not getting Coors beer in the east, and when I did, I wondered what was the big deal. |

The cigars at this shop cost an arm and a leg. Eduardo (who is also an "Eddie" at HLH) knows he's charging big dollars at this little shop and also knows there is a sucker born every minute..... Don Ursolo....who is a CRT discount sponsor......has some HIGH END products and some not so high end products.....that have always been just fine by me. Less than $1.00 per cigar and more than better than the $12+ to call it a Cubano..... Big Daddy wrote: Go see Karol at the HLH Cigar Shop. Straight across Morazon Park from the Holiday Inn. About six years ago I purchased a Costa Rican cigar in a cigar shop in San Jose. I paid about $8 or so. Then I went to Sacramento, California and happened to stop in the cigar shop in Old Town near the river. There I purchased the same Costa Rican cigar for $3. Just a personal experience. Also, I have had some Don Ursolo cigars and found them to be very good. |
