I have downloaded the App on my phone. My friend has downloaded the app on her phone. I will be out of the Country for a month. Has anyone used this setup before? I know I need my phone on the WiFI mode so I will not get roaming charges. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.Dale Ray

Hi

I have used Skype on my iphone in CR many times with no problem. I would recommend turning off the data roaming and make sure you have a good wifi signal.

I have been using Skype on my iPhone 2G here in CR for more than a year and it works great. WiFi connection speed is not that critical for voice only and have used it almost everywhere WiFi is available in San Jose including McDonalds and POPS Ice Cream stores! You won't have any problems.
The only suggestion I have for you is to make sure that the "Stay Online When Device is Locked" setting is set to on. This can be found under SETTINGS/General/SKYPE. This will allow you to receive calls when the phone goes into auto lock mode.

I used Skype on my iPhone 3GS in Costa Rica, and it worked great. I only made a few local calls, but no problems. I received a long distance call or two from the States, but they went to voicemail.

I have trouble using it here in the States, however. It requires me to use a country code, and you can't edit the phone numbers in the Skype directory. I'm probably doing something wrong, but as a result, I can't make local calls in the US.

Put your iPhone in airplane mode. Actually I just leave it in airplane mode when I get to Costa Rica. With the iPhone in airplane mode just turn on WiFi in settngs. In this manner you will never be charged for anything! If not, texts are .50 each and calls are $2.50 per minute and they will charge you even if you don't answer and decline the call so leave your phone in airplane mode and only use wifi. If you do turn on your iPhone make sure you have data roaming set to off. It is the default but make sure it is off anyway because data is extreeeeemely expensive via 3g.

As to Skype it depends on the wifi connection. I used it at the Sportsmens Lodge but had trouble calling the states. I think it was because I was on the second floor and didn't have a good signal from their router. I just used the phone in the room after getting frustrated. I hope you have better luck.

The country code for the U.S. is 1. Maybe you just need to add a 1 in front of each of the phone numbers stored in your cellphone. Like this: 1 310 555 1212

I can't edit the numbers in the Skype directory. I could write down the number, and manually 'dial' the number digit by digit, but that is too much of a bother; the software should figure this out for me, IMHO.

Right, but where is Skype pulling the numbers from? Change the numbers to all start with 1 at the source whether that's the regular contact list on your phone or on your computer.
