There is good and bad news about the dollar vs. the colon. I exchanged $100 for colones at the Colonial casino (always the best rate). I was given 50,500 col. The bad news is that means that the dollar has really taken a dive. The good news is that the mathmatically chalanged will find it easy to figure out how much things cost. (just multiply by two..... 10,000 col = $20)

Hi,

I still have 60k Colon from my last trip, old and not in good shape.

I read, they are comming out with new money - how long is the "Old money" good.
I am planning to visit CR, but you never know!! Maybe this year or next year!

The old bills should be fine for a few years at least. Beat up local currency does not present a problem to the locals. Anything less than mint in US currency DOES.

Will the Colonial Casino exchange money for you if you're not gambling there? A few months back they wouldn't.

To the best of my knowledge, the Colonial will change up to $200 for colones without any questions for anyone. If you change 50s or hundreds they will call over a pitboss to check the bills. Their rate has as far as I know, is equal to the banks.

The new Bills 20,000 and 50,000 are supposed to be out next month. I have already seen signs up the they won't be accepted. Most places now don't like to change 10,000 bills
