Are you referring to the Gringa about 50 years old with short blonde hair, always handing out the anti-prostitution literature. She's been there for quite a few years. Don't contribute to her 'cause'. I usually see her at the New York Bar every day around 5:00 for Happy Hour, spending the money she made from contributions. Just another Gringa hustler/scammer in CR. |

Thanks for the clarification Gringotim. 1) I believe she had gray/white hair? It was dark, so I am not sure. 2) What the hell is her "cause"? To have Laura Chinchilla abolish prostitution in CR? 3) Are there other Gringas hustlers/scammers in CR that we should be aware of? |

Call me cynical – no call me realistic, if she is Gringa, she is a hustler and wants to rip you off; it doesn’t matter if she is in the CR, US or anywhere (-cept fer yer sainted mother an’ me own). I would see her all the time in the evenings at the NYB...she will ask for contributions for a home for single mothers...she even had brochures....claims to be part of some ministry....I don't know |

Sounds like someone is very very bitter and/or has been burned, scorned or something from a gringa (or two) somewhere along the line. IMHO, the above statement is completely ridiculous and one should NEVER paint with such a broad brush. I personally know or have met PLENTY of gringas in CR and elsewhere that are absolutely no different in terms of hustle tendency than you or me. Most are just regular people with all the same sorts of minor flaws but also positive attributes as anyone else. Are there some that are rip-off artists? Of course. But I've probably run into just as many or probably MORE GringOs in CR who were hustlers and/or con artists and for that matter PLENTY of ticAs and ticos too. Gringas certainly do not fall into those categories any more regularly than any of those other sorts of people.Now if you want to talk about a more common type of hustle that you do find among SOME gringas in CR, I would have to put the Real Estate con artists at the top of the list. These are usually bored housewifes, living in CR off their husbands' savings or income and dabbling as dilettante RE brokers (e.g. Coldwell Banker or REMax) pitching overpriced CR RE to more recent expats and would-be ones as a means of augmenting their income or paying for their own ticket in latin pairodice. In that regard, they're really no different than many gringo expats who use various schemes against their fellow gringos to support their own lifestyle in CR (e.g. DougPI (do we really need a PI to tell us our "ex"-hooker novia is lying to us?), various adult-vacation promoters, the gringo guy on Avenida Central who comes up to tell you he was just robbed and needs some money to help him get home, etc.) |

Her name is Sandra and she is very nice. I have never given her a dime but I chat with her some time. She does not have anything to do with prostitution pro or con as one writer suggests she as Cal says collects for single moms or thats her story . She was lured by an older gentelman I know to his room at the Morazan for something he wanted to show her . When she got up he tried to kiss her and she jerked away and ran out the door. I always ask her have you saw " Tom " lately he told me he was going to give you $ 50 the next time he was in town. |

Yes, that sounds like Sandy. Supposedly a Quaker from the eastern Pa. area. She is always handing out leaflets for her cause, the homeless Ch*ldren of CR. She's been in CR for at least 20 years. She's a nice person to talk to, and I wanted to believe she was legit, but I don't think she is. I have seen her in the past with a young Tico all over her. As mentioned, she is quite often in the NYB in the evening, saddled up to the bar. She talks a good game and it's a good gimmick.....who doesn't feel bad for the homeless Ch*ldren of CR and is happy to give a dollar or two for the cause? |
