This could be an ongoing-Thread being as they change frequently. But anyway 2 weeks ago they had a 2-pack of Flor de Cana 18 for $62 (current NJ price is $55 EACH) and a 3-pack of Chivas Regal for an unknown price (I didn't check) but packaged in a nice backpack perfect for gifting your favorita (or her young'un). Your reports Gents?

That indeed is a great price on the Flor de Cana 18. I wish they would have a sale on the Ron Zacapa Centenario XO ($91 a bottle). I usually buy a bottle on most every trip. Hell, you can't even special order it in the States! It's a little overpriced, but it's one of the two best rums in the world (along with Demerara El Dorado Special Reserve from Guyana).

Yeah....I met a guy at the Castillo this past trip who had bought a bottle of Bailey's and a bottle of Centenerio [sp?] Rum at the Duty Free. He said both were really cheap; the Bailey's $11. I checked at the Mas O Menos and it's double that. I'm thinking about stopping at the Duty Free my next trip to SJO and checking it out. The downside is, I'll end up at the rear of the line for Immigration and Customs if I kill time in the Duty Free. :( It would be nice to take some Bailey's back to the hotel room.....the chicas love that stuff. :P

I didn't know that, but never had any reason to pay much attention. Where's it at? That would be the answer to my dilemma.

Always pick up a liter of Crown Royal after I pick up my luggage for $19. Paid about $38 at my local liquor store in Tx. On the return home it's 4 bottles

The only downside for me to carry any back is in Atlanta you go thru the extra security so it can not be in a carry on. If I check my bag it takes an average of 45 mins to an hour extra to get a checked bag. For the savings it is worth it but I am ready to head for the car as fast as possible for some crazy reason. The deals are great I admit. I sold cigarettes for a while to a manager at our local restaurant for enough profit to pay my departure tax. He got fired so I stoped getting them.

The duty free shops at SJO always have a lot of 2-fer specials. Even if you don't see a special for what you want it doesn't hurt to ask if you can get a 2-fer price for what you want to buy. You just may get lucky.

Buying booze to take home...
Connecting flights can be an issue. It's okay to carry your purchase on the plane from SJO but if you have a connecting flight and have to pass through another security check point your booze will be confiscated. On all of the connections I have had (Phoenix, Houston, Denver, Dallas) there has been an opportunity, immediately after clearing US Customs, to place your purchase in your checked baggage before rechecking it and proceeding through the security checkpoint. Just make sure that you leave some space in your checked bag and something to cushion/protect the bottle(s). I've never had a problem and my precious cargo has always arrived home intact. If you only travel with a carryon than you will be SOL.

buy the booze when you arrive then pack it when you leave your hotel so its good for the whole trip. spent a couple of trips in mia & dfw trying to repack with tight connection windows

Brother MrBlack's tip is a good one. Spirit for example checks your bag to your final destination--no problem.

Here's the great part about bringing booze into SJ

You are premitted to bring 5 liters in your luggage. Then you can purchase 8 bottles (like the Ticas, size doesn't matter!) and you don't have to even put your purchases through examination. The duty-free shops in the States have excellent prices.

A word of caution: I checked US customs and surprisingly you can bring in only booze produced in Latin America (Carribean basin, CA & Mexico) only duty-free. However, I don't waste good booze, so I brought in 1 L Bushnell's Original & 1 L Malt which cost $45.00 total.
