I wasn't hunting company so I skipped the Del Rey and Key Largo. A friend said the Key Largo was dead, no surprise. I could hear the music coming from the Monkey Bar a block away. Nobody in there. I would think the guys who love loud Reggaton would flock to that place, but it's always dead. I stopped in the NY Bar but they had a Tico DJ playing ear-splitting Reggaton, who also felt that watching 2 Ticas dance was more important than the 10 paying customers (at lest) he chased out. On to Papi's (formerly dos gringos) where I ran into some friends and was able to converse. After midnight over to the Poas where it was just right, just enough people for a party, not so many you felt overwhelmed. I almost got a freebie out of a gringa who was on her 2nd night in town, but she decided to go chasing powder instead. I'm actually grateful for that. Anyway, back to you, Howard.

Thanks for the quick update. I always get so lazy it is just easier to stay in one place. By the way, where are you originally from -- I think we are within spitting distance.

Born in Palo Alto, raised mostly in a suburb of Sacramento. Lived in Fremont and the other San Jose a while too as an adult.

Exactly...talk about false advertising. When I was there in mid November, they had signs posted in the NYB stating "DJ...Friday night, playing Rock". So, I'm thinking, OK, it might be worth checking it out. The first hour, the DJ played maybe two or three 'rock' songs. Then another Tico took over the DJ duties, and played continuous ear-splitting reggaeton crap. After an hour, I couldn't take it anymore, and went to the DR. Doesn't Richard know the difference between rock and reggaeton?!
I always seem to miss the Gringo Starr band there! Why don't you guys play more often there?

I'm glad to see a mention of Harry's Bar Poas by somebody besides me. He runs a good slightly funky place that's a CRT Sponsor (I think still) and gets his trade mostly from Hostel Pangea and maybe a few from Hotel Santo Tomas across the street. Also long-term guys from Marruecos at happy hour. Never had a bad time there.

Harry is a great guy and I like to end my night there cause it's close enough and safe enough to walk home for me.

Tim, Richard does know the diff but he doesn't show up most of the time. As far as Gringo Starrs, Mike has had a problem with his voice and is just now getting enough of it back to scream all night. We'll probably be there the first night in Feb.
