"Liquor Can Flow On Elections Day, Says TSE

Boozing it up on election day is OK with the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE), after rejecting an appeal by a citizen to ban the sale and distribution of liquor on February 7, 2010.

The TSE resolution number STSE-4118-2009 allows bars, restaurants, supermarkets, liquor stores, etc, to dispense liquor and beer, moving away from the tradition of "dry" elections.

In the past, the day before, the day of and the day after the elections, were all dry. Bars and restaurants had to lock their liquor cabinets and beer coolers. Supermarkets cordoned off their alcohol sections and isles.

A change in the Código Electoral (Elections Code) means the booze can flow during elections.

However, the prohibition against the flow of alcohol continues on Good Thursday and Good Friday, as those days are not part of the Código Electoral."

Thanks for the information, I was not aware about the ban of booze during Easter Week.

Question (which may have answered elsewhere here)--During dry periods, is booze for sale at the Duty-free Shops, or are we advised to bring it in, in checked baggage? (Thirsty) youth wants to know...

Duty free closed during dry periods. Not to much of a hardship however since we are only talking 2 days a year and they happen to be two days that occur during the period most mongers avoid like the plague.

JazzboCR...it's always possible to get nearly anything you want, anytime.
Back in about 1999, on my second or third trip to CR, I made the mistake of visiting CR during Easter. I got out of the taxi at the BW Irazu and noticed the bar was shut down, and it was in the afternoon. WTF??? A couple of taxi drivers told me they could get me all the booze I wanted.
