Post subject:  President Arias Quote About Working Girls

A few years ago President Arias was asked about prostitution, and he said something like this:
Quote:
Those girls are just trying to make a living, and they're terrific gals. When I was young I'd go to them whenever I had money in my pocket. We should not look for ways to punish them, but to help them so they don't have to do that kind of work.

I'm making that quotation up, but it's not too far off the original. I was wondering if someone with good Spanish can google up the original and paste it in or provide a link--best if to a primary source like a newspaper. Thank you, scholars of the hobby, for any assistance.

Nobody can help find the original? I'd like to use it in a paper.

I may be wrong, but I think it was the previous president, Abel Pacheco, who had fond recollections of his youthful trysts. Don Oscar seems a little more upright, or maybe more accurately uptight.

Bookie - did you read it in a Costa Rican newspaper? Do you recall if the periodical was a Spanish language or English language?

I agree with El T - that Don Oscar is a pretty straight laced guy. If he was capering as a youngster I doubt if he would announce it publically. It is something they all do they just don't talk about it.

For sure it was Pacheco and not Arias. He went further and said that he had been with several and they were some of the finest people he knew. The interview was in La Nacion and maybe reprinted in the Tico Times maybe 6 years ago. I think it came after someone suggested making prostitution illegal

This is hearsay, from a fairly reliable friend who used to work with La Nacion. Not fact though. She said that Arias had a lot of skeletons in his past, including working girls.

Good point my friend, but what politician does not have a few bones in the closet some which may actually constitute a skeleton. From my experience the more “self-righteous” they are, the bigger the skeleton, to wit Jimmy Swagghart and more.

But in CR it is a way of life, it is just accepted; that is what they do. That is why the Motel Eden exits. If you ever drive through Eden looking for a room most of the garage doors are closed. I am sure that is not for repairs. And there are numerous similar motels in San Francisco de Dos Rios.

And what about all the short term hotels around the Legislative Assembly and the Courts, I can think of about 10 off the top of my head. They have to have clients and guess who those clients are?

I'm sure you're probably right as my memory is very hazy. I read the quotation in an English language article somewhere--but I have no idea where. I'd like to get my hands on the original interview so that I could see the wider context.

Thanks to all who responded...I'll keep googling, now using Pacheco in my search terms, but if somebody else finds it please post.

I still haven't been able to find this in its Spanish original. If anybody with good Spanish feels like spending a few minutes playing the google game I'd appreciate the help.

My question is how can you ever know? Because of what they say? Because they complain they don't make enough? I don't think these are ways to know anything. I would like to see the original too, because if the Pres really said something like that, he's a third-world idiot of the first order.

Yes, some girls tolerate it better than others and learn to enjoy (some) guys, and even fall in love. But there's little question that if they had other opportunities, far fewer would do it. That goes for poor women everywhere, including the U.S. As far as being "forced" or not, that's apples and oranges. The act of forcing is a crime. But just because prostitution is legal does not mean it's of "free volition." True, some girls will never hook, even if they get evicted and their baby is starving. But a society as a whole will surely have more prostitution if it also has less channels for success.

You can always point to exceptional cases of women doing it for a while, keeping a perspective, and rising to become PH.D's. I like to think every woman I ever mongered was a together woman in disguise, with an insatiable appetite for sex, especially with me. But in truth, I could never have a long-term, serious relationship with a pro, or even a semi. Prostitution has a profound affect on girls, some more than others depending on their constitution. And for those PH.D., best-case scenarios, they too will always see men differently.

Having said that, I agree you can't save the world, and if the mutual short-term benefits are not with you, another chap will come along in 5 minutes. So treating them as well as reasonable, including trying to make them forget they're working, is always better than nothing. No need for guilt trips. But delusions of grandeur should be dispensed with, as well.

Good post SR.

Even mongers perpetuate this idea that prostitution is evil. Witness the number of men sending money so that the girls "don't have to do that". Or men that say, "Wow, she's a nine. I would give her a ten but she's a damn prostitute."

I have a different view of prostitution because I believe the evil of prostitution is a cultural thing. Why can it really be evil to give so much pleasure if a condom is worn and no one gets hurt?

I think these girls are angels and I will treat them as such unless they show me by their actions that they will do me harm. If they are loving and sweet, I will gladly pay them for their time, and come away feeling blessed.

The back-and-forth between Brothers Srilm and JM gets my vote as the "Civil Volley" of the year. Both made their points yet stayed gentlemanly--would that all our discussions were like this.
BTW, I split the difference between their observations. Somebody in any line of endeavor can be at the top of their game...and hate it...but be too trapped to change.

Post subject:  question

then how does the girl who is attractive and "falls in love" with someone 30 years her senior with loads of money fit into the equation. is she a pro or just someone who fell in love? money always pays for pu*sy no matter how you break it down..
no different than the girls in high school that only date you once you have a car..
you cannot seperate sex from money or money from sex.

Srilm:

Quote:
"So to all who say that a certain occupation is bad, I say, do it first yourself, see what it does to you, before you judge it."

Hum. I don't think I need to suck on a big one (unwashed) before judging the merits of prostitution. Like I said, treat'em well, you can't save the world. But be real. These girls are not into you, or sex with you. Good looking babes can have sex with whomever they want, 24/7. Some will warm up to you, at which point you're "less bad." Imagine going down on a 58 y.o., overweight woman, who bathed last a few days ago, times 5 per day.

'Nuff said on this thread...
