Realistically, on average what can a guy expect to pay these days? I know YMMV but those who are down there, who've been down recently or who live there, what are todays prices?

$350 to $1500, or more, a month for a RENTAL !

Why buy a place built out of concrete that you find out 6 months in that the pipes allow sewer gas into your building and you are the only one that seems to notice or care.

It's so nice to be able to pack your crap and move.

Do not buy in Costa Rica before you have lived here for 3, Three years.

There are 3 prices. The price that the chicas tell their girlfriends they got from the guy (Cien para el hora, of course). The price guys will claim they were able to get the chica down to (forgetting to mention all the drinks they bought for her back at the HDR/BM and the additional tip they paid her afterward, of course). And then there is the ACTUAL amount that was expended. In short, don't expect to get a "REAL" (whatever that is) sense of price from simply asking on a monger board.

Add to that, to the extent guys are fairly honest about it, the ones most likely to post responses are the ones who also travel to CR the most or even live there. Those guys are probably also more likely to speak more spanish, know how to pick out the chicas most likely to give the best deals (or actually know the chicas from past dealings and thus get pricing based on established or at least semi-established relationships) and are most experienced at negotiating with all the rest. Naturally, overall, they're probably going to get slightly (or greatly) lower prices than the average CR newb.

OTOH, guys who routinely buckle to the Cien rates (or at best can only knock them down $20-30) are probably the least likely to post responses to this question (even though I'm sure there are plenty of them out there, even on this board) out of fear of simple shame or fear of ridicule.

So any results of such a question here will be skewed. My advice to you is:
1) Never pay Cien UNLESS you make it clear it is for more than just 1 hour. There are just too many other hot chicas out there that are willing to go for less $ or more time and are probably just as good or better that no one chica is ever really worth paying that much.
2) If you manage to get them down $20-30 and you really are hot for them, go for it and don't worry about whether some other guy managed to get them down even further (or claims he did).
3) If you manage to get them down $40-60 first time out, jump on that and then boast post about what a good deal you got here (never mind all the other ones you went with in category 2)

I am actually shooting myself in the foot with these type of post as I have interest in real estate here that I will want to sell at some time. But as a member of this board I have to speak up and warn guys of the crap that goes on here. Costa Ricans give the saying , "I couldn't care less", its intended meaning.

"Do not buy in Costa Rica before you have lived here for 3, Three years."

And then you'll never want to buy there which is damn good IMHO.

I am not sure whether Jacoret was asking for prices for chicas or real estate, BUT either way DO NOT BUY---RENT!!!!.

And as has been stated, your millage WILL vary. There are so many variables involved in what each person spends (renting or buying) that there is NO way to answer such a question.

Every chica has her own Minimum price which may (and does) vary from day to day depending on her needs at the moment. Does she know the guy, does she find him interesting, or attractive; does she feel a possitive vive; does she find him annoying; does she find him very un attractive, or down right repulsive; does he smell (good or bad)--actually most chicas say we (gringos) all small bad to them; is he drunk and /or obnoxious? This list could go on and on, but you get the point. ALL THESE THINGS AFFECT THE FINAL PRICE!! I know chicas that regularlly go for prices varing from "free" to more than "cien"! Remember there is no such thing as "free" when talking about "renting" a chica!!!! it will cost you-and usually more than just paying a set price!!!!!

As for property: Others are correct in that buying is usually a big mistake (read that as "almost always") The name of the game in CR is "Take advantage of the 'rich' gringo". And the worst offenders are, in many cases, the 'gringo' real estate people!! The laws and safe guards in the states do not exist here. As has been said many times (from experience): hire the best lawyer you can find; then hire the second best to watch the first; THEN hire the third best to watch the first two!!! THEN SUPERVISE EVERY STEP OF THE PROCEEDURE YOURSELF!!. As for prices whether renting or buying, it ALL depends on: where, who, when, and need. The same, lets say 1000 sq. ft. place in Escazu might be $150000-$200000; in Curridabat-$100000-$150000; in Desamparados- $75000-$100000. And if you are a Tico the price will probasbly be about 1/2 the price for a Gringo. I know one gringo who is paying $300 a month more than all his Tico neighbors for an appartment identical to theirs.

To answer the question simply; There is NO such thing as a "set price" for anything in Costa Rica and the differences in what one person pays and what another pays can be, and usually is, EXTREME
