A friend from my work went to CR a couple of months ago and said she only used her iphone a few times and when she just got her bill it was $600. Be careful!

Yur good to go!
You can either international roam with AT&T or buy an ICE SIM so you can make local calls at local rates.
Keep in mind that there is no 3G network in CR so don't expect the same speed.
Prepago SIMs are supposed to available at SJO again. I'll let you know for sure tomorrow.

Yeah, it works just fine for voice calls and text messages. The rates are high so use Skype for longer calls anywhere there is WiFi. Most of the barstools I visited had adequate WiFi.

The iPhone Skype app is great; I had no trouble making calls from my wifi-equipped hotel room.

Yes they work with I.C.E. If you are going to use it with a local number, PM me. I have had three or four different iPhones here in the last 2 years o so. I have some good experience with unlocking the software, don't get scammed by any of the web sites, it is very easy and free to do.
