I'm not putting this in the "Novia" section because this chica is not my novia. She's a favorita, and I really REALLY like her and am meeting up with her next month.

When I called her and talked to her last, she was with her mom, and she passed the phone to her mom and I talked to her. She was really coo too and obviously cares a lot for her daughter.

Anyway, I got to thinking, I'd like to do something nice for my favorita, and since she IS so close to her mom, I thought maybe I'd take her family out for dinner (some place modest, but nice - nothing high end).

Do you think this is a nice gesture? Or a very bad idea?

Not a bad idea but may be misinterpreted. Mom & daughter might read more into it then you are intending. They are very likely to think you see the daughter more as a novia then a favorita. If you are prepared to handle that then no problem.

Then my idea of giving her a ring at dinner is probably a bad idea too???

Irish is on target, but if you take them out consider Donde Alcides on a Sunday afternoon.

I may be unschooled in these matters but agree with a very public place in the afternoon and --a ring?? Subject to total misinterpretation. even by a Gringa with presumably shared values and experiences. I'd sure give that one a deep re-think, Brother. Do Chicas and their mothers understand the concept of a "We're just Friends" ring? Where's Dad in all this?--it's his daughter too. Not busting or being discouraging here--just cautionary.

Most Ticas and Ticos are thrilled to go to KFC. You don't need to be any more elegant.

I think we may need to do an intervention.

To me meeting a chica family member is the start of a more meaningful relationship with the chica and she is ready for more from you. If you are not ready for that, stay away. Why complicate your life and hers? At the same time, she could be using her mom to get to your feelings, cutting her mom for a 10%-20% split of whatever she can get out of you. This is why I have a rule not to meet any family members, because on either occasion there is no win for me, UNLESS I’m really serious and ready for a commitment. In the Hispanic culture introducing a new man to the family is a big thing.

Ok... the ring part was JUST A JOKE.

See how that's funny? The whole "they could misinterpret what you mean" thing compounded by 100??? Jajajaja!

The dad has been out of the picture a LONG time, and has been replaced by a step dad, although I think he's really just mom's BF.

At a minimum they will end up eventually hitting you up for something. If you do intend to be more seriously involved it is inevitable that you will meet them. If not I would avoid it. If you want to know how a girl can work all the time and still have no money, it is generally because the other 10 family members are gettting the Lions share.

You're right - and she's told me as much - she's the only one in her family who works - well, the mother does a LITTLE, but she's the breadwinner.

Thus, why I thought it would be nice...

I personally would do something nice directly for the girl, new dress, spa time or for her Ch*ldren. Bilko's point was they will not appreciate a fancy restaurant meal and may think you are foolish for wasting money. A family style place with lots of typical CR food will generally be a bigger hit with them and easier on the wallet for you.
