The USGS says there was a 4.6 earthquake on the Costa Rica - Panama border region 0n Sunday at 5:02 GMT. I think that is Saturday at 10:02 PM in Costa Rica. The map shows a bigger one earlier this week near Managua.

I felt it in my 5th floor apt. It was enough to cause a tiny bit of rattling in my office, nothing severe, but I sat there waiting to grab anything that might fall off the desk.

It was at 11:02 MDT last night. In Sabana felt like a jolt followed by another jolt. Both moderately strong but very short. Was not a typical earthquake rolling or pitching motion.

AM Costa Rica says that the strength of this quake has been revised upwards to 5.4.

I didn't realize that Costa Rica was 6 hours behind GMT. For some reason I thought it was 7 hours.

Quake magnitude upgraded
by local seismologists

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Local earthquake experts have upgraded the magnitude of the tremor that hit southern Costa Rica late Saturday night.

The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica evaluated the quake at 5.4 magnitude. The U.S. National Earthquake Information Center had said 4.5 magnitude about 30 minutes after the quake took place and had been reviewed. A.M. Costa Rica published a news update shortly after midnight Sunday.

There still have been no reports of serious damage. The Observatorio said the quake was felt in Ciudad Neily, Buenos Aires, Golfito, Rio Claro, Quepos, Cartago and San Jose. The Observatorio's seismographs on line show that the quake also was felt on the Caribbean coast. The epicenter continued to be reported to be at about 20 kms (10 miles) east of Golfito, according to the earthquake center. The Observatorio said the location was seven kms west of Coto 47.

The cause of the 11:03 quake was reported to be subduction involving the Coco and Caribe tectonic plates.

For some reason the Costa Rica seismologists always give local quakes a higher number then USCG. I use the USCG rating simply because I then can compare it quakes through out Central America using a constant.
