The locals and expats probably already know about this, but here it goes anyway FWIW: Quote: Telecommunications officials have given authorization for six companies to offer Internet service, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and other online options in Costa Rica, logging in a breakthrough in the country’s long-sealed telecoms monopoly.
The green-lighted companies are Dodona SRL, Intertel Worldwide S.A., Worldcom de Costa Rica S.A., Call my way NY S.A., Redes Inalámbricas de Costa Rica S.A. and JASEC. These businesses can now compete with the state-owned Internet providers, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and Radiogárafica Costarricense S.A. I'm glad to see the bill passed. There was much talk about VoIP service being banned in CR. I know many companies rely on VoIP. ICE is very difficult to deal with even for the Ticos. There internet service is very unreliable and disconnects often. They offer minimal bandwidth and poor service. Wait, that's just like AT&T.  I don't think the bill covers cell phones at this point.
