In case you don't know it...you can walk into any pharmacy in San Jose and have your blood pressure taken for free. With all the stimulation some of you guys get when you are here on vacation....it might be a good idea.

i cannot remember, are there not also smaller clinics/doctor offices where you can get basic medical services for a reasonable price., without going to one of the local hospitals?

medical services seems so reasonable in CR.

Brother C'dude--Yes med services in CR are reasonable because they have a well-developed public-private partnership. They are also more human-centric because of the people here. That is a model that is growing in the US--the medical-home concept. What the US need is more GP's in overall charge of your healthcare and less farming out work to specialists. Unfortunately being a GP pays zip compared to the rarefied air of those specialists. I don't have the exact reference for you but Business Week had a strong article recently on just this subject--worth looking up. A whole-person approach vs. a bits-and-pieces approach.

You can get a 'consultation' at Fischel among other places for 10k colones or less. I don't know how in depth the doctor will go, but they can do things like write prescriptions for tranquilizers and whatever else isn't available over the counter (which isn't much).

Why in the hell would I get it checked at a pharmacy or clinic when usually there is a qualified health-care professional conveniently located right outside the Delrey door ready to check it for me?????

Brother Sin City--Your tagline answers your question. Also "qualified" is the key word.

Hopefully you're in good health now so a GP is fine for colds and flu's etc. but wait till you come down with any sort of chronic ailment or, worse, some form of cancer.....I wouldn't want to be at the mercy of GP's and be stuck on months long waiting lists for specialists.
