and you see he is not the same as you or your best friend, when you were growing up. He fell in the lake off the dock, of all places, and being told , "don't play around" (for those that fresh water fish, he was swinging the treble hook around like a baseball bat, I was watchin out for my eyes). After pulling him in via his t-shirt, I pushed him again. He was not happy but he can swim. Am I wrong? I want to mentor . Too stoic or Spartan? He is 6 yrs old, before it is asked. Some honest advice, please. He is a great K*D!

Don't be too Spartan with him. In this day and age many would consider it 'to much'. But, if he isn't listening, you can gently push his butt in a seat and make him lock eyes with you while you gently explain why you do not like his behavior. Always end the lecture session with a pat on the back or some other positive behavior.
After a couple of times he will know that you mean business.

If he really enjoys going...........

Go by his house the next time, let him know that you are going, and that he will not be going due to his choice of actions on the last trip.

The following trip ask him if he chooses to listen to you, and if it is his choice to listen, he can go.

IMHO, it is important that he understands that his choice of actions caused him not to be able to go. As El Viejo said, be positive with him, and help him understand his choices do have consequences, both positive and negative.

If you want him to go because you enjoy him being there, not because he enjoys fishing, you may want to look at another activity that he really enjoys.

Health & happiness...

Sounds like you were a bit ruff on him. Remember he is only 6 yrs old.
Plenty of books out there on this K*D of stuff. Do both of you a favor and read up on this subject. I have been there and do that. You will not regret reading up on this stuff.

6 yo seems a bit young to be a decent fishing partner. Can he even sit still in the boat for 5 minutes and pay attention for more than a nanosecond?

Give him a few years. Then start him off from the dock using a string with a hook on it and a can of worms that HE dug up.

Worked for me! I probably caught a ton of perch off of docks. By the time I was a teenager I was trout fishing every opening day by myself. I was usually home with my limit shortly after mom & dad were getting out of bed!
