Cashing a c10,000 bill now is forbidden. Nobody wants them. It is like $100 bills in the states. I use only c5000. bills.

I have not encountered that problem anywhere. Even the vendors at the Pavas feria were accepting them as of last Saturday.

Has anyone else encountered that situation? If so could you provide some details like where and what they told you why they would not accept them. Thanks

I have had so many problems with them from taxis that cant make change, hell it has even happened with 5k colon bills. The funniest was at the pulperia i bought 3k colon worth of stuff and gave him 10k he fumbled around for change and after 5 minutes sent his son to the house to get change. The son comes comes back with 100 and 50 colon coins.... so he gave me a hand written iou note for the remainder and i went back 2 days later to collect

This all might have something to do with a topic discussed in another Thread--so few Ticos carry cash money (preferring debit cards) that merchants are starved for currency and don't provide themselves with a big enough "bank". When confronted by the need to make big change, they're up the spout. Just a guess...

Agh.. and it pisses me off too.

When I go to Multi-plaza to see a movie, the line is a mile long and moves at a snails pace because each and every one of them is paying with a debit card, and their merchant terminals are slower than snail snot. What's worse, they have no sense of multi-tasking. They can't run the card then ring up the customer, they have to do it in the slowest manner possible.

Take for instance, the concession stand. The girl is standing there taking your order and then she goes and fills the popcorn bag, when she gets back she puts the drinks in the fountain dispenser (she could have done that first and they could be filling while she did the popcorn) and then once she has everything there, she rings it up then they give them the debit card. It's slow as hell.

Then i've also noticed that more and more tico's have taken to cutting the line with their friends... walking up when their friend is at the front, and then glomming onto their order, but it always screws everything up and it takes then 3x as long to sort it out.

Gah, it just pisses me off when i have to get to the movie an hour early because nobody has any cash.

I just returned from a week in Guanacaste last night. I had no trouble getting folks to accept 10000 colones notes or US cien bills anywhere.

I use c10000 bills virtually everyday and have NEVER EVER incountered a problem with anyone nor any place not wanting to take them except as has been noted when they do not have change. Hell, January 2010 they will add c20000 and c50000 bills. Then there may really be a problem since so many places never have money to make change. Since right now c10000 is only about $17.50, you do not need to buy much before it will be that much anyway.

Yous guys are Big Shots!

I never have problems with 10,000 colon bills because I only use them when I know I can get change from da transaction.

Most of the time I break down to 1,000 bills to pay taxis, propinas, and buy things wit!

I have had more problems spending US $10.00 bill than any others including da big head hundreds!

We are not "Big Shots". We just live here and in the course of our daily commerce have occasion to use all denominations of bills. A 10000c note is less that $20.00. Do you also only carry 1, 5 & 10's in the when you are home? I doubt it. You most likely use 20's just as we use 10 mil notes when we are home.

Alway seem to lose loose bills. Childhood thing.

Not good wit a lot of cash. I double it. I Crumple it.

Here at home I never carry more than $20.00 at a time, and my debit/credit cards.

Just careful that way so I wont lose anytjing.

I am a sore loser. Cant stand to lose a dolla.
same in CR.

I carry less than 10,000 $20) unless I have sumtin set up with a chica. Then and only then I might have $60.00 to $80.00 US on standby.

Never more. No need.

I swear that the taxistas won't have change for a C1000 bill if the fare is a gringo! Even for a C5000 fare with my novia and her tia in the cab one ba$tard wouldn't make change for a C10.000 bill. I had to borrow C5k from auntie! They act like C10.000 is $100 or something. Their eyes get big and they start moaning "NO!"

I can't believe that they operate this way in a country where the bus drivers can make change!

Thanks for allowing me to vent.
