PostPosted: Mon Sep 08, 2008 2:11 pm Post subject: Peluquirea Maritza
After many visits to San Jose (and surrounding areas/venues, etc) I was fortunate to find out about this wonderful Salon (thanks to Don Gordo).

After a burning the midnight oil the first two evenings of my Labor Day trip I decided to walk over to this Salon to see what they had to offer. The directions were quite simple,,,walk about a block past Idem and look for a sign on the right side of the street (Peluquirea Maritza/Calle 11 between Ave 10 and 12 on the Wesrt side,,No. 1089).

I was greeted by her young son at the front door,,Maritza had two customers and asked if I could return in 15 minutes,,,no problema!

Upon my return I was greeted by three smiling Ticas (Maritza, Karol, and Lisette). I believe they are all sisters. Maritza is the boss and started this business (on her own) about 6 years ago. I was told to ask for the Don Gordo "Especial" that included the following:

30-45 minute Spa-pedicure and foot massage
Professional Manicure/arm massage (better than any Asian nail salon)
Professional Haircut and style
45 minute Facial,
15 minute neck and shoulder massage
Straight edge barber shave
2 1/2 hours of Pura Vida with three awesome local girls (non-sexual)

I have travelled extensively around the World and have had many "salon" experiences in Thailand, Central America, Europe, and throughout the U.S. This experience was one of the most entertaining and relaxing experiences I have EVER experienced. All three of them were meticulous about their presentation, and more importantly,,their work!

If you have a few hours to kill and want to look nice for your evening date,,,take a walk, spend some time, and enjoy the treatment(s).

Thank you Don Gordo!

Pura Vida!

One last thing,,, the price was only 13,500 Colones....what a bargain. In the USA,,,this would run well over $200 USD

Try Oscar's Paul Mitchell in the San Pedro Mall, second floor, back in the alcove where all the beauty salons are. Some nice eye candy always available, try around 3:00pm.

I go to Anka Esthetica, it's in Rohrmoser/Pavas across from the Tips near Parque Sabana... They do a lot of hair/makeup for fashion shows so there's always a ton of hotties there.

If your looking for a haircut more than hotties there are 3 nearby I've used. The cheapest but I don't remember the exact price was in PlazaAvenida. But it is often very busy. I usually go to the one inside the Aurola Holiday Inn building. 5K colones each for a hair cut and manicure. Same price across the street if they are busy.

Maybe a little far for a haircut but saw a sign in Cartago last July for only 500 Colones. Add in bus fare there and back and still under $3! Not like a $10 HC is gonna break the bank but these days $7 saved is $7 saved.

And I somehow thought the young male barber was going to tell me where the "chicas" were if you know what I mean.

I liked Cartago.

Ah, but are you getting a 500 colones cut, that is can you tell that that is all you spent. Also 5K colones is about $8.75 right now, so your saving less than $6. So how much do you value your time? Of course if you wanted to visit Cartago anyway then its probably worth checking out.

Why go all the way to Cartago to save a few colones? All kind of hair cut places in San Jose that advertise 1000 colones.

A quick Google search found some terrif places to get your French poodle groomed, but also: www.peluqueria.com/Salones_de_Belleza/s ... lleza.html Then scroll down to Costa Rica
Of course you could also ask any guy on the hotel staff who has a good haircut, "Donde esta la Barberia?"
Truthfully, I'd go with the ladies at Pel. Maritza now that Roy the Barber has died.

Good barbership in Omni Cenger (Centro Omni) downtown where the large Pizza Hut is located. First Avenue between Calles 5 and 3, bottom floor behind PHut. Barbers are Colombian brothers named Frank and Willy. Also good manicues.

Just go to SL and look for one of the prettiest faces there, Yaki. Oh! and that face is setting above a hugh set of naturals. Seriously, she owns a salon in Guadalupe. and works about 1/2 the time in SL and 1/2 in the salon. All in one package deal  :P :D

OH and the 3 sisters at Maritza are NICAS, not Ticas

Haircuts for men in San Jose cost 1500 colones and there are many places to get one within walking distance downtown.

I can't remember the name of it but if you want the salon experience cheap and you are in the Officentro area, right next to the old Taco Vato (California) is a great place. Ask for Jose, he's amazing. 4000 colones but the same in Vegas or LA would be $100 easy.

If you are in the gulch there is a decent salon close by. Near the SW corner of Av 5, C 5, diagonal from the SW corner of the Holiday Inn. I had a haircut there in Feb. IIRC it cost C1500. The prices are posted in the window. It's a fairly posh looking joint but the prices seemed reasonable. Especially considering that a haicut at home costs me $15.

I never got my haircut there but I recall walking by and seeing a particularly hot looking chica stylist. Unfortunately, I didn't really need a haircut at the time, but it did make me seriously consider going in to get a little "trim".

The Don Gordo "Especial" might be a good deal compared to what a "spa experience" would cost in the US, but I'm not exactly the pedicure type and the ~$25 is more than I'd normally pay for just a haircut back home. That "salon experience" that Holden mentioned at $7-8, would be less than a US haircut and anything it came with beyond just the haircut would be a bonus, but he didn't really explain what exactly made it so much better than a regular haircut and, besides that, I have no idea at all where the "Taco Vato" is. It may not be much more convenient than going to Cartago for a cut. It doesn't get much more convenient location-wise and pricewise than the place near the Holiday Inn. As always, YMMV.
