Sex tourism in Costa Rica

Simply type in an Internet search engine Sex Costa Rica, and the possibilities of not only get information but also to access packages with hotel, meals, transfers and women included.

That is, web pages to promote Costa Rica as the sexual ideal destination for many foreigners who want to take a break from their countries, and if so, well accompanied.

In a matter of minutes we found 4 places even offer packages for 3 days and 2 nights, 4 days and 3 nights or 5 days and 4 nights, with prices ranging from $ 600 thousand to 2 thousand 800 U.S. dollars.

The pictures are more explicit and that the most worrying for the National Chamber of Tourism, is that those pages are names of hotels and resorts, which the sites are open to these sex tourists.

According to the vice president of CANATUR, William Rodriguez, they could only act against a hotel or resort, if they were affiliated with CANATUR.

But for Rodriguez, is what he calls the informal private company that performs this type of advertising, which was considered too negative, it gives an image that the formal sector and the government does not want to give Costa Rica.

The truth is that the pages as we could find and see, show that if there is sex tourism in Costa Rica, and, apparently, and perhaps in large magnitude.

I think Teletica recycles their thought process their last expose was in June last year too. Girls being lured to MEXICO for prostitution by the promise of jobs etc there were two Ticas found in the expose in mexico not the other way around. Than of course Teletica in its desire to recyle news did their prostitution for June report. Hopefully not much will come of this is was not geared to CR but the other way around.

Actually this reporting of chicas being EXPORTED to Mexico could be good news for us. Maybe Laura and her merry band of do-gooders will come to realize that outlawing prostitution in CR will force many local working chicas to go the exportation route into dangerous situations.

The thing to watch is the implications that have been made in the local media that the owner of one of the better known MPs was somehow involved in the trafficking. At this point, it is just being hinted at and has not been a central part of the story; but, if it turns out to be true, it would be very bad news.

I have some time during lunch today and just came across this story from La NaciÃ³n. http://www.nacion.com/ln_ee/2009/junio/ ... 95942.html This story includes a photo of a page from the catalog used by the service in Mexico. It appears that the chicas pictured are the two involved in this case. Anybody recognize them? I don't. For those who read Spanish, I've copied this story below. The executive summary of new information is that the two unfortunate victims returned safely to Costa Rica. The ringleader (or one of them at least) in Mexico is a Costa Rican woman who had not surrendered to Mexican authorities as of the filing of this story. I haven't found anything about suspects on the ground in Costa Rica, but they certainly exist. Somebody in Costa Rica had to convince the 2 chicas to go to Mexico. With the difficult economy clearly affecting Costa Rica and Colombia, some chicas are looking for better places to work like Panama and the heavily touristed (by gringos) beach areas of Mexico. Whether those places really are better for working chicas, I have no idea. Regardless of how much these two particular chicas knew about what they were getting into, forced labor or indentured servitude are clearly wrong and should not be tolerated by the various authorities or by us as consumers. Following is a Mexican news story from last week, a little older than the story I just posted. La mujer es presunta responsable de los delitos de asociaciÃ³n delictuosa, privaciÃ³n ilegal de la libertad y de otras garantÃas, lenocinio, trata de personas y lesiones, ilÃcitos denunciados y querellados por Raquel Ivannia Canales Acevedo, Yoheni Chaves Fonseca. Los primeros tres delitos tambiÃ©n se los imputa la RepresentaciÃ³n Social. SegÃºn consta en la averiguaciÃ³n previa 583/19Âª/09 los hechos iniciaron el lunes 8 de junio cuando dos agentes de la PolicÃa Judicial acudieron a un llamado de auxilio de Raquel Irene, quien lloraba en la vÃa pÃºblica, en la calle 15 entre 14 y 16 de la colonia MÃ©xico Oriente. Las dos extranjeras fueron contactadas vÃa Internet y traÃdas a MÃ©rida a base de engaÃ±os, ya que al contratarlas les dijeron que trabajarÃan como modelos. Al llegar al aeropuerto de esta ciudad, procedentes de MÃ©xico, las recibiÃ³ un chofer, quien inmediatamente las condujo al predio de la MÃ©xico Oriente, donde en contra de su voluntad y bajo amenazas de muerte quedaron privadas de su libertad. En sus declaraciones ministeriales que en ese predio las mantenÃan encerradas y que sÃ³lo salÃan cuando las obligaban a sostener relaciones sexuales con diversas personas en diferentes lugares, como hoteles, moteles y casas particulares. El grupo de lenones, integrado por hombres y mujeres, las obligaba a prostituirse hasta cinco veces al dÃa y sin importar la hora, ya que eran transportadas en vehÃculos que conducÃan dos sujetos, quienes estÃ¡n prÃ³fugos. AdemÃ¡s, ellos cobraban por los servicios y no les pagaban cantidad alguna. En la casa de la colonia MÃ©xico Oriente eran custodiadas por la ahora inculpada, Rosa MarÃa Casanova May, quien tenÃa el encargo de vigilarlas y cerciorarse que las mujeres no hicieran cntacto con ningÃºn cliente o entre ellas mismas. TambiÃ©n tenÃa la responsabilidad de darles de comer y de asear la casa. Sin embargo, Rosa MarÃa igualmente tenÃa a su cargo golpearlas cuando alguna de las mujeres no cumplÃa con las reglas establecidas o pretendÃan fugarse. Una de las mujeres que dirige el grupo acostumbraba amenazar con matarlas y devolverlas en pedacitos a su lugar de origen, ademÃ¡s de que les gritaba â€œaquÃ vienen a trabajar como prostitutas y se hace lo que yo digaâ€. Todos los maltratos y vejaciones, asÃ como la prostituciÃ³n que practicaban, lo tuvieron que soportar porque estaban amenazadas, hasta que uno de los â€œclientesâ€, que conociÃ³ la situaciÃ³n en que se encontraban, comenzÃ³ a prestarles ayuda e incluso les comprÃ³ boletos de aviÃ³n para que escaparan y regresaran a su paÃs, pero sus planes fueron descubiertos y Rosa MarÃa le dio de golpes y puntapiÃ©s a Raques Ivannia, quien a pesar de la agresiÃ³n logrÃ³ escabullirse de la casa en donde las tenÃan como prisioneras y solicitÃ³ la ayuda de la PolicÃa Judicial, quienes logran detener a la ahora inculpada y al mismo tiempo corroboraron que Yoheni permanecÃa privada de su libertad. Rosa marÃa Casanova May ya estÃ¡ recluida en el reclusorio, donde quedÃ³ a disposiciÃ³n del Juez Penal que corresponda.

La defensa de Rosa MarÃa Casanova May, acusada de mantener encerradas a las jÃ³venes ticas Raquel Canales Acevedo y Yoheny Chaves Fonseca, pidiÃ³ un careo con ellas, pero ambas ya no se encuentran en MÃ©rida, pues fueron trasladadas ya a su natal Costa Rica, a donde llegaron el sÃ¡bado poco despuÃ©s de la medianoche, escoltadas por elementos de la fuerza pÃºblica dependiente del Organismo de InvestigaciÃ³n Judicial. Ahora prÃ¡cticamente la Ãºnica diligencia que se podrÃ¡ llevar al cabo en el Juzgado 7o. I know both chicas. They both have worked at Relax Raquel used her real name and Yojeny used the name Ana. I think they have both worked also at NF in the past but an not 100% sure of this. Raquel was working at Relax when they left for Mexico. My understanding is that at least a couple of the other chicas there tried to talk her out of going. I am not at all sure of what she was told or promised that would have convienced her to leave RElax; she was very popular there especially with the Ticos and she was doing above average for a 'working' chica.

I just realized that this topic has also been mentioned in the recent NF thread. I don't always read threads about NF since it's not one of my favorite places. I'll still add any follow-ups I find here since it's not clear (to me at least) that the NF connection brought the chicas to Mexico.
