Post subject: New Transit Laws in CR
PostPosted: Tue Jun 02, 2009 5:53 pm
Thought I would open this topic up for discussion, especially for those of us who live full time in CR.

Is everyone aware of the new requirements that you must have in your car, and I believe the official start date to these new laws is sometime in September.

We are now required by law to have a jack, a reflective vest, a reflective triangle to place on the road, a first aid kit, jumper cables, and a fire extinguisher. Additionally, they are finally adding a much needed car seat law (heads up Pac!) There are also the drinking and driving laws that we have discussed on this board previously.

My point is this some of these things are a little extensive. I cannot think of a reason that a fire extinguisher should be required by law in every car on the road. Is there a politician in CR who owns the largest manufacturer of fire extinguishers in CR? Some of the things like a reflective vest are an excellent thing to include.

It is also possible that I understand a few of these things incorrectly.

I open the floor for any conversation anyone else may have on this subject.

Hey, it's my car seat and I'll stay in it as long as I like! Oh, you mean for 'Tasha. Yeah, the guys got her a very nice car seat and we are getting a booster for Eveling's son, Wallem.

I don't have a problem with the requirement and will have the required stuff. As I mentioned before, the problem with the law in Costa Rica is that the mandates are not funded so there is very selective enforcement. This will be another opportunity for people to get jacked up by the police.

Most people I know already have most of that stuff. A jack, reflective triangles are not a new requirement and most guys have jumper cables. I bought a reflective vest at Pequeno Mundo this morning for 1300 colones. Still have to get the first aid kit and extinguisher but I do not think it is that big a deal to have that stuff. I do not think the transitos actually check for that stuff but you must have it when you take your car to riteve because they do check.

For most of us it is not really a big deal.

Like Pac, I have a new born daughter she is almost 3 months old. We purchased a car seat before she was born. It was actually when buying a second car seat last night that I discovered all of the new laws. The sales clerk thought I was buying it because of the laws and offered other items. I was actually buying a second car seat because we purchased a second car and wanted to have the base in each car to make things easier. I actually picked up a set of jumper cables that day because I did not have a set her in CR. They actually came into use two days later as an employee left his headlights on and with an automatic transmition I was able to help start the car when leaving the office.

As was discussed on the radio during my drive to the office some of these things can get expensive for many of the Ticos. They mentioned that it could cost as much as 200,000 Colones depending on where the items were purchased.
