Post subject:  Good Deals on Liquor

I know most of you guys stop at the Duty Free in the airport to stock up on liquor for your trips. I however, alway waaayyy over pack and a bag of liquor bottles would only be more crap I have to figure out how to lug out to the taxi and then into my room. I have, on past trips purchased beer, vodka, and rum at MasXMenos, but I don't know if the prices I paid were that great since I don't drink that much in the US.

My question is, is there a good place to buy liquor in the gulch area that has good prices. I don't mind paying a little bit more and this would save me the hassle of buying it at the airport.

Also, does Sportsmans lodge have an Ice machine. I do not remember seeing one there. The last time I stayed there, I tried to empty the mini-frige and put my own stock in there, only to find out that mine was taken out and theirs put ack in the following day.

Yes the Ice machine is just before the new section.

The prices at the airport duty free make it worth the hassle. There are no liquor stores in the gulch that I know of. Mas x Menos, Auto Mercado and Perimercado all sale liquor, with a limited selection, at prices higher then the duty free.

I agree with Irish Drifter, get your booze at the airport. There is always someone at the airport to assist you with your bags. Most of time you have to beat them off with a stick so you can control your own bags.

At the SL there is a bellman. He will take your luggage to your room for you.

With a short taxi ride to Hipermas in Guadalupe you will find a fairly large liquor department.

However, I have found the savings at the airport to be as little at 10 percent and much as 200 percent depending on the bottle of booze you purchase. Somethings that you get at the airport are really hard to find anywhere else.

All in all, the savings at the airport is worth it.

200%?... Does that mean they pay me to take it? :P :P

Duty Free: On the left just as you enter baggage claim. Grab your booze and a free cart, put luggage and booze on cart and head out. You will have all the help you need curbside.

SL Ice: Two machines, one is past the reception desk toward the Clubhouse section, the other is next to the banos in the new section.

Mini-bar: Just tell you maid where the mini-bar goodies are hidden and that you don't want them replenished. No more problems.

In the upper duty free only, 2 one liter bottles of Smirinoff (ranked #1 by that POS rag New York Times) is only $11.

I was in the liquor department of Hipermas today. It is an entire aisle on both sides. Good selection but for Wal-Mart, pretty expensive. I enjoy Caserillo del Diablo’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2007. If my memory serves me it is about $7 at the Airport, it was a little over $12 at Hipermas.

I do just what Pacifica55 suggested – while waiting for my luggage, buy booze at the shop next to baggage claim. Not much lugging around to do from that point.

Brother ScubaBum--Why the drive-by knock on the NYTimes? One of their street vendors diss you or what? It's the closest thing the US has to a national newspaper of record (you're not seriously considering McNewspaper, are you? And yes, there's the Wall Street Journal, from which I also quote). Just wondering...

Anybody that would pick Smirnoff as the #1 vodka of choice deserves to be dissed.

Pretty good cross section. NYT generally viewed as left leaning and the WSJ as having a right wing bias.

Got to agree with

How does one judge a grain-neutral spirit that can be made from grain, vegetables even fruits, that by definition is tasteless, odorless and colorless? Well, gang, it took some digging but your intrepid researcher the Jazzbo got the facts, the article Brother Shadowman (sort of) quoted from. Judge for yourself and be amazed:

NOTE the date of the article, please.

I agree with JazzboCR, the New York Times has historically been as close to a national newspaper of record as it gets. It is noted for its sophistication and its readership really is nationwide, particularly among those who aspire to positions of power or who are in positions of power. That is why I was surprised to see the #1 rating for Smirnoff. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/26/dining/26wine.html

I am so surprised, next trip through SJO, I will probably pick up a bottle.
