Post subject:  Email to text and back

There is a chica that I would like to stay in contact with. She has an ICE cell phone. I would call her except for two things. One, it would cost money, and two she speaks very little English and I am linguistically challenged in the other direction so non face to face verbal communication is a problem. She has no computer. I tried getting an email address set up for her and that failed. The only technology available at her end is her cell. If I can text to her I can translate ahead and avoid the real time language barrier.

In the US you can send a text message to a cell phone from email. It must be 160 characters or less to meet texting requirements.

Here is how you do it.

#
Step 1

Log into your email or open your email program.
#
Step 2

Start a new message.
#
Step 3

Type the recipient's 10 digit cell phone number @ the cell carrier's email domain in the address box. For example if the message recipient uses Verizon it would be cellnumber@vtext.com. Sometimes there's a special domain for text messaging; check with the cell carrier's web site.
#
Step 4

Type your message making sure it doesn't exceed 160 characters, otherwise it may get cut off.
#
Step 5

Send your message.

The recipient can then simply reply and their message will come back to your email. It works great across all US carriers. You simply have to know the carriers email domain.

Does this work for ICE phones?
What is their email domain?

P.S. There is a side bet that Irish Drifter will nail this one.

I don't know if the method described above will work for CR or not. I have another method that I use to send free SMS messages to a CR cell phone...
The CR newspaper, la Nacion (http://www.nacion.com) provides a free SMS service from their website. You have to register (PITA but easy) and then you can log-in from their website and send free SMS to CR cells. The service is easy to use and works well.

Go to the Nacion home page, scroll down until you find the section for "SMS Gratis".

Text messaging is hit or miss when sending from the US. It works fine if you are on the ICE network.

I have sent messages to my cell phone from the internet while in Costa Rica. I have received about 50% of them. I have sent text messages to my ex/novia and she has received about the same percentage.

Depending on your carrier using the *notify at the beginning of your text message will let you know if the message was received. This response is sometimes based on the central clearing server for the messages and is not a guarantee it was received by the recipient.

I found the text addresses for the U.S. carriers too, but what is the one for ICE?

Can you receive replies with any of the methods described?
