Hey Guys: My Novia and I have a 17 month old son who lives with her in Santa Barbara, Heredia. While bathing him she noticed an enlargement in his scrotum. Yesterday, she took him to the clinic; where the Doctor indicated that it was indeed a Inguinal Hernia ( where the intestine pushes through an opening and into the scrotum ). The Doctor said it was an emergency and gave her a referal to the Ch**drens Hospital for today. She took him to the Ch**drens Hospital and they sent her to the hospital in Heredia. The hospital in Heredia gave her an appointment for a month from now. We are currently talking to another doctor who we know personally and looking into other options. I will consider taking him to Hospital/Clinica Cima and paying out of my own pocket if necessary. I am seeking input from board members who are knowledgable on this condition and how important it is to act quickly. It appears that he needs a small surgical procedure and I am wondering if this can be done in a clinic or needs to be done in a hospital. I have done the Web MD reading, so please limit advice to actual knowledge from professional training or experience with your own K*ds. Thanks Tons.

I had this procedure done in 1996.

My symptoms were nausea due to intestinal binding.

They told me I had probably had this since I was young .

I waited months b4 I got the correct diagnoses. He should be able to lay flat and the intestines move back to their normal position.

I had no insurance at the time so I had the procedure done at the medical school in Augusta Ga for $2000, cash.

I had inguinal hernia in 2006. It happened when I was working out. It doesn't hurt, it just looks kind of gross. In adults, it is not an emergency, maybe it's different in K*ds. It happened a couple of days before a CR trip for me. I went to a doctor and scheduled surgery after I returned. I went on the trip and then had it done when I came back.

There are a couple of different ways to fix it, both surgical. It can't be done in a clinic. It's an outpatient procedure, no hospital stay, but the first 3 days after surgery are hell. It hurts every time you move, and God help you if you cough or sneeze. The old fashioned way leaves a bigger scar and a newer method (I think it's called laporoscopy) which is what I had. It's a smaller incision, and less recovery time.

An inguinal hernia can become a serious emergency if it becomes strangulated. It seems GM's main concern is how big of an emergency is his son's condition since one doctor said it's urgent then another puts it off for a month. GM asked "how important it is to act quickly", I think that depends on the risk of it becoming strangulated. I don't know how they assess the risk of strangulation, if that risk is higher in Ch*ldren or if it's more urgent to get it repaired in Ch*ldren for other reasons, but I know adults that have lived with an inguinal hernia for years before getting it repaired. (including myself)

I've had 3 surgeries, the first was laproscopic and it failed. Based on my experience I'd NOT recommend an adult having one fixed this way, it was more painful and invasive than just letting the Doc slice me open and fix it right the first time. The last one was outpatient, went home the same day.

Update. An ultrasound reveals that my little guy has a Inguinal Hernia and a Hydrocele. We are currently calling around for a good clinic or surgeon to take care of it. Have any of you guys used any surgeon in the San Jose area and had a good result ? He is in good spirits and no fever and has a good appetite, but we still wanna get this squared away. I don't want to take chances by waiting for the "free" medical care.

We were very impressed with Hospital Catolica. The surgeon for Eveling's c-section was an artist, she was up and around the next day. Can't say enough good things about the professionalism and service.
