Gents:

I just want to say Thank You to our military for the dramatic and superbly executed rescue off the coast of Somalia. And with no loss of life for the good guys. We owe our servicemembers a salute - especially when they put themselves in harms way AGAIN for all of us!

Well Done! 8)

Ditto on that! And thumbs down to the stupid who ought to go back to fishin' for a living. When the dumb asses agreed to be towed at distance of 75-90 feet from the Navy ship they signed their death warrants. No competent sniper can miss head shots at that range.

PS. It is time to resurrect the Stephen Decatur style of pirate warfare that crushed the Barbary Pirates in the era of Thomas Jefferson.

These pissants need to be crushed and if they are not, then international standards have really gone to hell.

PS. In a rare gesture to the French, tI'll say that they did well last week on this too.

It's nice to see what our fellas are capable of when the politicians get the phuck out of the way and let them do their job!

Job well done!

And the pirates have been put on notice.

Ditto on the kudos and I completely agree that any competent sniper will make that 75' head shot every time regardless of the ocean roll. I am surprised that we don't use their abilities to a greater extent.

Aside: I believe the long range record currently stands at 2660 meters held by an Australian. Seventy-five feet is pointblank for these guys!

Ocean Roll?

Ocean Roll?

How about two (2) Ocean Rolls, spray, body movements and a bunch of hot-off-the-griddle stress points? WOW!!

Me: I couldn't even set the T&E on a 500m shot in quick enough time to qual for the snipers, and so I'm doubly -- no phuck that -- triply impressed that these guys got it off a deck of a modern warship.

"YE-AHHH baby!", is what I hope they (quietly) breathed as the round sluiced its way through grey matter at that distance. Hell, I'd be happy for a Side-of-Boat shot.

The French tried the same thing, Frenchie-style (killing a non-combatant in the process): http://www.casperstartribune.net/articl ... 975541.txt

Ahhh, shucks. HEY! Somebody take away the weapons from Mr. Z.

Yes, this was a suberbly executed small military operation and as a former Marine I'm especially pleased but amidst the victory cries, please keep in mind a few things, a few hard truths:
(1) The US as a country and separate economy was founded in part by state-sponsored piracy (they were called "privateers" but that's a distinction without a difference). We used these same actions against the Brits in the War of 1812 and the Civil War (supply interdiction to the South).
(2) The Barbary Coast "pirates" were state-sponsored and were thus privateers not pirates in the classic sense.
(3) A reading of Brother Prolijo's post in Smack Talk will give you an understanding of why these guys do what they do. In most cases they "pirate" to keep their villages/ tribes alive in a truly horrific chaotic situation caused in part by us, and not just for their own monetary gain.

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26518

(4) We're only occasionally going to encounter and beat these guys at sea. Next time will be much worse on those they capture (akin to the WW I actions of the Germans and the Brits--civility by the Germans ceased when the Brits started turning merchantmen into warships [Q-ships]). The only way to solve this problem is to deny them shore facilities and pray to whomever we don't have another Blackship Down situation.

(The record kill is 2,430 meters, just over 1.5 miles. It was charted by Canadian army corporal Rob Furlong against a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan's Shah-i-kot valley during Operation Anaconda in March 2002 — Time Magazine 04-15-2009

Brent, I know that was eclipsed this year, twice in a three day span as I recall. The first was over 2500 and the next 2660. I will try to find where I saw the data.

Missile use against Libya or any other country is a poor analogue to this situation--those are functioning states with clearly identifiable hard targets. These pirates live among a civilian population and there is no functioning state or clear targets. Actually, they haven't much in the way of shore installations to move against without massive civilian casualties which I don't think anyone here is arguing for.

Clinton did not call for military force, although she mentioned "going after" pirate bases in Somalia, as authorized by the U.N. several months ago.

guess hillary and the current administration would disagree.

Airlines now permit selected aircrew to carry a pistol while in the cockpit. If the fishermen turned pirates continue to threaten US ships and sailors, it's time to put a couple of M16's, and one M60 machine gun and some flash bang grenades on each merchant ship. Train selected crew to use them and pay them a few extra bucks as hazardous duty pay. After a few run ins with such equipped crewmen, the pirates might decide to go back to fishing or at least to look for easier targets. I also think it is time for the international community to fund a little fleet of privateer pirate hunters.

In addition, I am thankfull that President Baskin-Robins was preoccupied with more important stuff( welcoming the new First Pooch to The White House) and allowed the folks who knew what they were doing to handle things. Now, the ship lines need to take security more seriously and make their ships less accessable, plus equiping them with some of the new, non-lethal deterants.
