Heredia is about 20 minutes (or more) north of San Jose, depending on traffic and how you are traveling. It is said to be safer than San Jose, and also a poor place to monger.

However, Heredia is a Terrific place to find non-pro's. There are man Universities in Heredia, and the nightlife is very good. If you have game, and want to take your chances... there are few better places.

Heredia is both a province and a city.

The city is very different than San Jose. It is more like the other larger and traditional cities in Costa Rica (Cartago and Alajuela) which are not like San Jose. It is quite traditional: a town square with a great fountain, an imposing Roman Catholic church, an old military fort “el Fortin”, some excellent examples of period architecture and all the stores and shops that make up a town.

It is the home of Universidad Nacional (UNA) and Universidad InterAmericana. They also have a mall, Plaza de las Flores. There is a lot of manufacturing in the area for example the local major appliance manufacturer Atlas.

It is not a mongering paradise. However, many who privide services for monger in San Jose reside quietly in Heredia. But remember it is both a province and a city. There is a big casino near the center of town but I understand it to be pretty tame.

The center spread of the Weekend section of the Tico Times focused on Heredia (Published Friday, March 27, 2009).

Forgive me, GG, but given your propensity for using metaphors, do you really mean "sausage shop" or was that meant as a euphemism for some sort of Pucho's type Pickle Palace? :P

Seriously though, I'd add to your list a place called Fresas about a block away from the University on the east side of town - great fruit licuados or batidos (whichever you prefer).

It's in Herradura - behind the Los Suenos Marina.

A Heredia vignette:

I spent last weekend in Heredia with my amante and her 6 year old son....and we passed away a hour or two in Parque Central in Heredia on Saturday in the late afternoon. The weather was paradise, at least for me, dry with a light breeze, occaisional gusts, and mucho sol...I got sunburned even! (thats saying something for a South Floridian). The park was full of tico families and little urchinitos running around chasing and feeding the palomas(pigeons). We sat by the the church and let the little guy play. After a while we bought some bubble juice (sold in a glass Gerber Baby food jar to a 6 year old) (muy tico), and let some bublas fly much to the delight of the youngsters. I took a brief siesta resting my head on my amors lap and soaked in the rays, dropping into blissful semi-consciousness as she lovingly caressed my forehead. The parakeets screeched and fussed from high up in a tree in the church courtyard, but I slowly quited my mind in a test-pattern like calm. But suddenly there was a cry...Raton! Raton! A small grey rat was spotted scurrying in front of the church along the benches on the north side. The boys went into a frenzy! A dozen answered the call and came running at the poor animal...it couldn't figure out where to go and zigzagged in a panic between stomping feet. Eventually some muchacho got a solid stomp in, and the doomed animal staggered. The next blow came swiftly and with authority, and the animal rolled on its side and gave up the ghost. The boys cheered, looked in triumph for a brief moment, and left the carcass to oblivion.

I watched, thinking, this is not my culture... and returned to my comfortable position.... :)

PR,

I recognize that rat-stomping game. Exactly what the Dodgers did to the Cubs in last years play-offs

I only mentioned it because in Heredia, as in most of CR, you will always see Ticos wearing LA hats
