When I go to the southern Pacific coast to do some surfing I used to take that dangerous road up over the mountains and turn west at San Isidrio de El General. But late last January the road south of Manual Antonio was graded with new bridges and all, except for the last 5 K to Dominical. This way is much faster. Anybody driven down that way yet?

Went down there last month its not even half done from quepos to dominical much more than 5k needs to be done. Even when it is done it is much faster to go through San Isidro.

Despite time, both have their advantages--fun to stop in jaco if you go the Quepos route; but that road west from San Isidro to the beach is my favorite in CR.

I'm driving to Quepos from San Jose this Sunday with six wingmen and my gf to go fishing on Monday. It's about a 3 1/2 hour ride. It's been two years since I drove the 44 km stretch from Quepos to Dominical and it was brutal. Back then, I did notice a lot of work on Hwy 34 near Quepos and did see a sign in Dominical that a major road improvement project was underway. I'm anxious to see what kind of improvements have been made. Hwy 34 from Dominical to Palmar Norte (and the Interamerican highway) is a beautiful four-lane road where you can speed along at 120 km/h.

Nice to hear the feudal system is cooperating, the Quepos gang kept the road from being improved. It will be interesting how the southern coast will change from easier access...if this was 5 years ago, I would expect real estate prices to rise...and they might do so if the rich and mighty ie: AIG failures, look for asylum away from the States!!!!

I have to agree. It is wonderful and scenic driving that way....and I felt safe....especially driving further south to Palma del Sur. Great ride. I haven't been on that Quepos road to Dominical for over a year but I actually enjotyed the ride. They did have a lot of equipment but it may have just sat there all this time.
